Fascial Stretch Therapy
What is fascial stretch?
Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) began in the NFL and later reached other sports such as NHL and rugby. It is a pain-free assisted stretch system that assesses and improves restrictions in the body helping you with performance, injury prevention and pain reduction. We are super excited to have Melissa introduce FST to our KBC members.
Who should consider FST?
Dealing with chronic back pain: Chronic back pain is often a result of muscle tightness, joint stiffness and lack of mobility. FST can put an end to your pain by restoring mobility and function.
Regularly train: Recovery is key to training and FST improves blood flow to tired muscles resulting in less soreness and quick recovery!
Active lifestyle: FST can help you better your running pace, life heavier weights, increase flexibility and shoot up your endurance.
Dealing with an old injury: Your therapist will help you with your range of motion allowing your body to slowly get rid of unwanted compensations.
What are the benefits of stretching?
Stretching can:
Reduce pain
Reduce risk of injury
Reduce or eliminate tight muscles
Reduce or eliminate stiff joints
Improve circulation
Improve posture
Make you stronger
Better range of motion
Mobility Maintenance and Improvement is important for all ages, fitness levels, and not limited to recreational or competitive athletes.
🥊Our private sessions start with an assessment of where restrictions are present in your body.
🥊We proceed with a Fascial Stretch Therapy session, focusing our attention to restricted areas.
🥊At the end of our FST session the client is given maintenance homework to continue independent work on improving the health of their fascia and improving their mobility.
As we build routines, return to work and kids go back to school, it’s important to continue keeping our community safe! Please be aware of any possible symptoms and contact us if you’re unsure.
Our staff, trainers and coaches will be following strict protocols limiting contact and ensuring the safety of our clients. In addition to cleaning in between clients and classes, a deep clean and sanitization of all locations are conducted at the beginning and end of each day.

Neyen Pitawanakwat, one of our youngest boxers, was awarded with the best male bout of Brampton cup 2022. With COVID putting a halt to Boxing in Canada, we are inspired by the pool of talent within our programs at Kingsway. We look forward to building the future of boxing with our youth team!
Following a two year pause on competition and months of intensive preparations, both our Youth and Elite competitive team killed it in the ring. Our youth team works hard and trains hard every day and more often than not they truly surprise us whenever we get to know them more outside of the ring.
Meet Neyen Shawn Felipe Pitawanakwat.
Neyen’s first name means breath of animal and is native from Chile and his last name means between the clouds. He has done a lot for this community and continues to help and support as a positive enthusiastic participant.
“My spirit name is Southern Thunder Bird, given to me by my uncle in a naming ceremony. I definitely have gifts that I need to take with a lot of responsibility as my community needs a lot of healing. I feel very grateful to be part of such a rich community, I hope that they feel proud of me as I am of myself one punch at a time.”
Neyen Shawn Felipe Pitawanakwat
Today we give you a glimpse of Neyen’s life and his contribution to his community, we are so proud of him!
The drum and music of the community.
His uncle Bill and his wife Winnie gave Neyen his first drum when he was 5 months old. He instantly connected with the instrument and picked up singing as well. You will often find him singing at demonstrations supporting Indigenous people and their rights.
He started supporting ceremonies and in 2021 he helped with singing at Sarnia Sundance.
Neyen was also part of the Every Child Matters pow wow.
The level of passion and dedication came very early for Neyen and he was out supporting with his family anywhere that was needed.
Neyen discovered his purpose and responsibility for his community at a very young age. We are beyond proud of him and honoured to have him in our KBC Family!

Introducing our newest programs brought to you by Yoga Instructor and Practitioner Sylvia Perry!
These yoga classes are conducted at our fully-renovated High Performance Studios, incorporating alignment, strength and flexibility by building a firm foundation in traditional Yoga!
✅ These mat classes will have specific exercises to help you gain control, strength, alignment and individual support in your poses and postures.
✅ Grounded in patience and focus, each week you build on your strength, flexibility and alignment. With careful and safety conscious instructions by Sylvia, your foundation of traditional yoga will get stronger with each session.
✅ Sylvia has over 20 years of experience in Yoga and is a certified E-RYT 200 YACEP to teach Hatha Yoga and traditional Indian Hot Yoga. You are sure to notice her love for the practice in her classes with her joyful and informed instructions and trust us when we say that her classes are always packed! She believes Yoga is a meaningful way to connect with others and hopes that’s what shows in every one of her class!
Program Descriptions:
Hatha Yoga Description: The Hatha yoga class involves a set of physical postures (yoga poses) and breathing techniques. These poses are practised more slowly and involve holding the postures longer than a Vinyasa flow or Power Yoga class. Hatha Yoga is a great place to start for beginners or practitioners wanting a deeper more relaxing experience of yoga.
Power Yoga Description: Power yoga is a fast-paced and intense class, not recommended for beginners. The practice focusses on building strength and stamina. If you would like to burn calories, this is the yoga for you. The practitioner moves from one posture to another rapidly, linking your breathing to the different motions of your body. A power yoga class may seem more like a fast paced fitness class rather than a relaxed, meditative yoga experience. However, the instructor will focus on alignment, mindfulness and breathing as well as the postures throughout. If you are new to power yoga, the program starts off slowly, building as the weeks go on.
Vinyasa Yoga Description: Vinyasa Yoga is one of the most popular forms of yoga practiced in the world. Vinyasa is a style of yoga characterised by moving seamlessly from one posture to the next, using breath. Commonly referred to as “flow” yoga, it is sometimes confused with power yoga. Vinyasa classes offer a variety of postures and classes are rarely the same. The opposite would be “fixed forms” such as Ashtanga which has the same sequence every time. The variable nature of Vinyasa Yoga helps to develop a more balanced body as well as prevent repetitive motion injuries that can happen if you are always doing the same thing every day. Vinyasa, is a breath initiated practice, that connects every action of our life with the intention of moving towards what is sacred, or most important to us.
Every Saturday: 9:15 am – 10:30 am Location: High-Performance Studios | 3046 Bloor St. W.
Drop-In Program Cost:
Class Starter Pack – $105.00

Good Afternoon, Hope your weekend is going well, and you are looking forward to tomorrow’s session as much as I am! We will begin at 🔔10am and I will be locking the door so do your best to make it on time or even come early so we can have a wee chat before we dive into some movement together. If you have a yoga or pilates mat please bring it with you, if you happen not to have one I have extra. Pilates is done either 👣barefoot or with socks(I prefer the socks with grips on the bottoms to help with static positions). I suggest bringing your water with you just in case you need it throughout the class. Feel free to hang your coat on the hooks on the wall when you walk in the door and kindly remove footwear at the same spot. There are shoe/boot trays out for you to use, this leaves our movement space free of clutter and dirt.
Looking forward to moving with you tomorrow!🙏

May 02/2022
Good morning KBC Fam🌞
I’m so exited to move with you!
This class is geared towards specific exercises to help you gain control, strength, stability and mobility in your body.
I wanted to let you know that I have found it helpful to optimize alignment or engagement of an exercise, for many of my clients to use touch for some tactile feedback.
Of course, only with your permission! If for any reason you are uncomfortable with this type of interaction, please do not hesitate to let me know prior to class (inform by email or in person).
Mobility and flexibility are two elements that are crucial in training. It lets your body heal and recover after those intense sessions!
More than a great addition to your daily routine, there are many direct benefits yoga provides to boxers:
🥊 Slowing Heart Rate: Boxers are always given 1 minute breaks between rounds during a bout. For a seasoned boxer, this time is not used to catch their breath, but to bring their heart rates down and receive much needed coaching from their corner.
🥊 Mindfulness: Learning to stay in the moment as a boxer, despite the punches flying your way, is more than an asset, it’s a NECESSITY. As Mike Tyson says, “Everyone Has A Plan Until They Get Hit In The Face.” All the training in the world won’t help you if you lose your focus in the ring.
🥊 Strength and Balance: If you can’t balance on your own, it won’t get better with an opponent literally trying to push you over.
This week, we would like to share Kat’s top favourite asanas that should be part of your daily routine!
📆 Join us Every Wednesday morning at 7am for yoga with guru Kat Muchnik! Learn More
Kat uses an approach that focuses more on the feel and less on the look leaving you ENERGIZED and RELAXED inside out!
1. ASANA (i.e. Yoga poses)
The main physical benefits of yoga are core strength & flexibility. A daily practice of these few poses will have you making great strides soon.
*step 5 & 10, add a hamstring stretch by shifting onto your back leg, and straightening your front leg. (Repeat for 5 breaths)
2.WARRIOR POSE
Because we can all use some balance in life! Here are standing poses to try for balance.
In any pose consider using props. Gently leaning on a block, a water bottle or wall can help the integrity of your alignment. Have self compassion and patience if your poses today don’t look like these examples. Meet yourself where you are today and have faith in your practice.
*in poses 1&2, your hips are square to the floor (toes pointing down). Arms can be behind you like airplane wings, in a T with elbows straight or bent, of fully extended in front. Pose 3 your hips are stacked And open to the side (toes point sideways).
3. JUST BREATH
PRANAYAMA (breath) How you breathe has many implications. We focused on meditative breath that will activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This will lower your heart rate while bringing calm and focus to your mind.
*Box breathing: consider exhaling with the soft “who” breath we practiced.
This can double as your daily meditation practice. 1) Set a timer for one minute. 2) Focus on your box breathing. -When thoughts come in, allow them to pass without reaction and bring your attention back to your breath 3) As this becomes easier, invest more time here. The overwhelming amount of scientific evidence clearly supports the multitude of benefits we gain from this practice.

Spring is here and so is outdoor boxing and fitness!
The Kingsway Boxing Club had been delivering virtual programs to the comfort of your homes for the past several months. It was a challenging time but we all stuck together and made the best of it. Now, as Ontario moves into the 3-step reopening process, we are happy to announce that our OUTDOOR BOXING CLASSES ARE BACK!!!
Feeling unsure about leaving your home and getting back out there? This week, we will share with you our top four reasons to train outside.
1 Boost Mental And Physical Health
Research highlights that an average of 30 minutes spent outdoors in nature results in an increased physical activity, lower prevalence of high blood pressure and depression.
Fresh air, grass, trees and the colours of nature have a positive impact on mental health and physical well-being. So get out there and RUN!
Let’s be honest, working indoors can be SO boring! When you are outside, you see people, scenery and so much more, motivating you to work out longer!
A research study done with older adults found that people are more likely to do physical activities outdoors rather than indoors because the environment is more stimulating and leads to more enjoyment.
When you are working outdoors, there is natural resistance, such as wind while cycling or running, causing you to work harder and burn more calories!
One study found that in a high-intensity workout, you’d have to run 15 percent faster on a treadmill to burn the same calories as running outdoors.
4 Sleep Better
Turns out that exposure to natural light actually enhances your sleep! One study compared the effects of outdoor exercise among 360 women, and found that being out lead to significant sleep improvement.
Did you know, that the source of many of life’s discomforts, stems from not drinking enough water?
That may be an exaggeration! But seriously, water is an elixir that guarantees to help you reach your fitness goals, if consumed the right way.
“Entering into an activity with a mere 2–3% level of under-hydration has been shown in research to reduce strength by at least 2%, power by approximately 3% and high-intensity endurance by around 10%,” says Jennifer Novak a strength and conditioning coach and founder of PEAK Symmetry Performance Strategies.
This week, we will be sharing with you, our guide on how to stay hydrated before, during and after your workout.
Before Your Workout
“You should aim to be fully hydrated within an hour of starting your workout, because the act of drinking water only starts the hydration process,” explains Mike Israetel, PhD, co-founder and chief sport scientist of Renaissance Periodization and a U.S. Olympic Sports Nutrition Consultant.
The best way to tell if you’re hydrated before a workout, he says, is to check the colour and quantity of your urine. “If you’re peeing clear-yellow voluminously several times in the hours before training, you’re probably good to go.”
During Your Workout
You should aim to take a water break every 20 minutes and drink 5 ounces approx. This can fluctuate depending on how hard you’re training or how cold the environment is. The only time you might not want to drink is right before a high intensity workout. Strategize according to your environment and type of training!
After Your Workout
The best way to calculate how much water you should drink is by weighing yourself before and after your training and drink the amount that your body has lost in weight.
Post workout, the recommendation is at least 16 ounces of fluid for every pound lost! This might be slightly more for men.
A Few More Hydration Tips:
Staying hydrated and nourished is crucial to ensure you have optimal energy levels and get the most out of your boxing class. Proper hydration enhances your performance, improves endurance, and helps you recover faster. Here are some essential tips on how to stay properly hydrated:
Drink Water Throughout the Day: Start hydrating well before your class. Drink water consistently throughout the day, aiming to consume at least 8-10 glasses (about 2 liters) daily.
Hydrate Before the Class: About 1-2 hours before your boxing session, drink an additional 16-20 ounces (500-600 ml) of water to ensure you’re adequately hydrated before you start.
Avoid Excessive Caffeine and Alcohol: Limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration.
Bring a Water Bottle: Bring a water bottle with you to the class and take sips during short breaks or as needed to maintain hydration.
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body’s signals. If you feel thirsty, take a moment to hydrate.
Replenish Electrolytes: During intense workouts, you lose essential electrolytes through sweat. Consider drinking an electrolyte-rich beverage or adding a pinch of salt to your water to help replenish them.
Post-Class Hydration: After your boxing session, continue to drink water to rehydrate and support your body’s recovery process.
In addition to hydration, make sure to nourish your body with a balanced meal or snack before your class. Opt for a combination of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats to sustain your energy levels throughout the workout.
By prioritizing hydration and proper nutrition, you’ll be better equipped to perform at your best during your boxing class and make the most of your training experience. Remember, taking care of your body is a crucial part of achieving your fitness goals and enjoying your boxing journey.

60 minutes of physical activity is the recommended daily minimum to stay fit and healthy!
But with so many different options out there, virtually and in person, how do you decide which one is right for you?
This week, we will be sharing with you our guide to choosing the right program for you.
1 Are You A Solo Or Group Athlete?
Deciding if you want to workout on your own or as part of a group is the first step.
Working out alone lets you set your own schedule and you are not tied down to anyone else’s. However, this means that you are your own motivator and have no one holding you accountable! On those lazy days, you are most likely to ditch your workout.
Working out in a group/virtual group is super fun! A good coach will also be there to correct you and motivate you throughout the way and it gives you the human interaction we all need, especially during these times.
2 Check The Weather
The weather throughout the year is an important factor. If the weather fluctuates drastically between seasons, activities like running and cycling become difficult to sustain. Your best bet is to choose different activities for summer and winter that compliment your ultimate fitness goals.
3 How Much Time Do You Have?
Figure out how much time you really have on your hands for a workout. Certain activities require a longer time commitment to be effective, whereas high intensity interval training (HIIT) is for people who have very limited time on their hands.
4 What’s Your Budget?
Ask yourself how much you can spend on classes and the gear. Once you have that in mind, explore the different options available within your budget, you will be surprised at what all you can actually do that will cost you almost nothing! A lot of classes focus on body weight for which you don’t need any equipment! But of course, if you can spend more, you will have more options.
The best way to keep yourself motivated is to find something that you truly enjoy! If you’re not a fan of running or weight lifting, do not force it! There are plenty of other options out there! Not to be biased, BUT boxing is one of the most fun activities to pick up!

Good rainy morning,
Just a few things about bootcamp:
Rain on Thursday – June 9? While I know we need this rain, I hope it doesn’t put a damper (pun intended 🙂 ) on our bootcamp on Thursday. If it looks like it will, I’ll email you by noon to let you know if we are shifting to an indoor bootcamp at the High Performance Studio on Bloor Street.
Spring Session Ends June 23 Just a reminder that there are three bootcamp classes left in this spring session – we end on June 23rd.
Do you want to continue with another six week session? I wanted to get a read on how many of you would be interested in carrying on for another session after this one is finished. The dates would be June 30 – August 4th – six weeks. I know many of you have summer plans so I’ll be happy to regroup in the fall if that works better for the majority.
Please let me know if you would be interested in another bootcamp session.
Have a great day and I’ll see you on Thursday!

Hi,
As another year comes to a close I wanted to reach out and wish you much happiness for this holiday season and year ahead. 🎄
It may have been a year of challenges but there were many fun and memorable moments too so here are some of my favourite things about 2021.
Bootcamp with the Kingsway Boxing crew was so much fun! I loved being with everyone in-person and outdoors and I will be doing another bootcamp this Spring!
Two of my personal training clients are over 80! One is over 90! I love working with these women. How many times can I say it people, age is just a number and keeping your body moving is the most important thing you can do for your health.
Vancouver Island and all its natural beauty was a wonderful reprieve. We will be back!
Having an injury has made me both physically and mentally stronger.
Tuesday nights were back at Kingsway Boxing with my Conditioning class. This small group of kick-ass people keep me smiling and sweating for the full 45-minutes. I love you guys.
Continued my relationship with Brooks Running Canada as one of their ambassadors. This company represents all I love about the running community and making fitness fun. #runhappy
But my absolute favorite thing of 2021 was being connected with you, my clients, classes participants and friends. Thank you for your inspiration, loyalty and kindness. 💓

Hi,
I just came back from checking the lighting at Fairfield Seniors Centre now that the clocks have been turned back and I’m sorry but it’s just too dark there to do a bootcamp safely but I promise to start it up again in the spring.
I will be continuing my Tuesday night class at the High Performance Studio with a new session starting up in the new year, so please reach out if you want to be included in the class as it has limited space.
Jennifer will be working out payment of the $20/class owed but if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thanks for your enthusiasm and good humour at the bootcamps these past few months and I’ll see you in the spring (or sooner I hope). 💓
Be well,
Jo-Anne

Hi,
So, I’m sorry for the late email but my days just get away from me but I’m back from my wonderful week off and ready to do another bootcamp tomorrow night (Thursday, Oct 28) if you are. Because we are losing the light earlier could we move the start time to 5:30 or 5:45?
Please let me know asap if you are ok to join tomorrow night. For billing, I’ll just keep track of who came and how often we do these one off and then we’ll square up with Jennifer.
See you tomorrow?

Hi!
I hope you are enjoying our Thursday night bootcamp as much as I am?! Just a reminder that there are only two more classes left in this session. I have decided to not continue with bootcamp beyond October 14th as I will be taking a vacation the following week and I think that the weather will be too unpredictable and probably a lot colder by the end of October to continue.
I will however be continuing my Tuesday Conditioning class which is at the High Performance studio on Bloor Street. Currently the class is full at 9 participants BUT I would consider adding another class at 7:00pm if many of you bootcamp people want to come on Tuesday night instead.
Please let me know your thoughts. Enjoy the weekend and I’ll see you next Thursday! 💪

Hi there,
Well, the rain continues to fall and the majority of you can reschedule for tomorrow night so let’s do that. As much as it would be fun (maybe?) to workout while it rains beside us, I think it’s safer to reschedule. So same place as previous, map below and please bring a mat and water.
Thanks everyone for your quick response and flexibility.

Good morning 🌧
Fingers crossed the rain stops and we can do our bootcamp tonight. I’ve outlined two options for us. Please take a minute to read and respond so I can plan our class. I will make the call about today’s class at 3:30pm so please look for a confirmation email.
1. TONIGHT – Location Change
If it’s a lighter rain I would like to propose we move the bootcamp to under the Old Mill bridge. I will send a map if we choose this option. There is a lot of room for us to stay under the bridge and if it’s not pouring rain the road should be ok.
Please let me know if you have any concerns about tonight in the light rain under the bridge.
2. TOMORROW – July 9
If we have to reschedule could you do tomorrow Friday July 9 at the same time? The forecast looks a bit better tomorrow for our time.
Please let me know if you can reschedule to Friday, July 9 5:30pm. Thanks!

Hi,
Just checking in to see how you are feeling after our first bootcamp last night. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. If you haven’t worked out in a while you may be a little stiff today or possibly tomorrow so please take a few minutes to stretch.
I also wanted to remind you that next Thursday is Canada Day so we won’t be doing bootcamp again until July 8th.
Lastly, as we move into stage 2 we are not limited to just 10 people together in an outdoor setting so the class can be expanded if you have friends or relatives who were trying to register, they now can.
Great seeing you all again and I’ll see you in the same park on Thursday, July 8th, 5:30pm.

See you tonight!

Hello,
I had a bit of an issue with my knee on Monday and was not able to put weight on it. I am improving quickly and am now walking unaided. I’ve had a diagnosis from my doctor and it’s all ok. No damage to the knee joint, it’s something called a Baker’s Cyst behind the knee which my doctor believes popped on Monday causing the sudden pain. I know this is a lot of information but I thought it better to over communicate than leave you guessing as to why the class has been postponed one week.
I am confident that I will be able to guide you through a bootcamp next Thursday so here are some details for you in anticipation of our first class. Please contact me with any questions and thank you for your understanding and patience. 💗
NEW START DATE: Thursday, June 24 – Note, no class Thursday July 1
END DATE: Thursday, August 5
TIME: 5:30pm sharp
DURATION: 45 minutes
Here are a few things you should know before we get started:
COVID-19 PROTOCOLS:
Wear a mask when we first meet at the park. (Near Humber Bay Yacht club – location map below). You may take it off once we start the class. You are not required to wear a mask during this workout but can do so if you prefer.
Try to stay 6’ apart while we’re working out.
If you cannot make the session, please text me 416 305-7023 minimum 24 hours in advance. This is important for contact tracing.
WHAT TO BRING
Bootcamp will not proceed in bad weather. If stormy weather is forecasted I will contact you to reschedule. Please ensure your cell number is up-to-date in your MindBody account so I can text you.
Wear weather appropriate clothing. Wear a hat and sunscreen.
Bring a water bottle and a mat. I will be bringing a backpack with extra water for emergencies only.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT BOOTCAMP
Drills, cardio, strength training and I’m planning, a whole lot of fun.
I will be bringing equipment but if you have a resistance band, please bring that with you.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this class. I’m excited to get outside and workout with you. See you NEXT Thursday, June 24.

Apr. 05/2021
Hello and I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend.
As you’ve heard, while Toronto barely opened for outdoor training, the province is back on lockdown, emergency brake, dark grey zone, or stay at home order unless you need to go to the mall or big box stores until April 28. 😬
Our first two classes Thursday April 15 and April 22 will be postponed and I will add them on to the end of the session. Fingers crossed this lockdown doesn’t get pushed back any further into May but I will try to keep you updated.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions and thanks for your patience and support.
Still in lockdown or just need to fit that workout in before your next zoom meeting? The pandemic has introduced us to a whole NEW NORMAL when it comes to staying fit!
Health and fitness has endured a full 360 as we’ve all shifted to home workouts to supplement our fitness needs. Most of us struggle with space restrictions or simply don’t have the luxury to create a proper home gym. So this week, we will share with you six household items that double as effective gym equipment.
Rather than investing in weights at home, try using a bag of rice or water bottles in your workout routine!
Below is a rough equivalent to give you the gist of how much you should be lifting!
2 lbs = 1 kg of rice, 1 litre of milk
2 Backpack Squats
Get your backpack out and fill it with books as per how much weight you are comfortable with. Put on the backpack and wear it as you drop it like its hot!
3 Laundry Detergent
If you need a bit more weight, a jug of detergent is great! An average full bottle of detergent weighs 15 pounds and it works great for Russian twists, overhead sit ups or even as a kettlebell substitute! Just make sure the lid is tight!
4 Gliders: Paper Plates
If you are used to using gliders for leg and ab workout, paper plates can be a great substitute!
5 Pistol or Sit-Squats: Your Couch
It turns out that a couch is just not for napping! A couch, or even a chair, is very handy when it comes to doing your triceps dips, incline/decline push-ups, and incline/decline running planks.
6 Yoga Blocks: Books
Are you in need of yoga blocks to help your poses and stretches? Worry not! Remember those books you piled up to read someday? They can be stacked up and used instead!

When it comes to losing weight, what we need to do is quite simple: calories intake < calories burnt = the calorie deficit life!
However, when it comes to building muscle, things can get a bit tricky. Muscle growth depends on many factors and this week we’re highlighting four simple, but important factors in building muscle.
Yes, it is about more than just lifting weights!
1 Consistency
You should aim to workout at least four to five times a week, allocating your days according to muscle group. This helps to focus on building strength in each part of the body, without overworking the same muscle groups. HOWEVER, you will only see results if you stay consistent with your routine!
2 Protein Is Life
Muscles are actually more effectively made in the kitchen than by just working out! Diet is VERY important when it comes to gaining muscle and your protein intake is a key factor. You should consult a dietician to chart out what is best for you body. A good range for most people to aim for is between .7-1.3 grams of protein per pound of body weight depending on your goals, body composition, weight, and training style.
3 Variety
If you keep doing the same routine over and over again, your body is going to plateau! Your body adapts and that is why variety is important. So mix it up and adapt your workout to focus on different muscles keeping your body surprised and confused!
4 Sleep
You need to let your body rest! When you are asleep, your body repairs your muscle tissue, switching the old and damaged with the new. Resting overall will keep you alert and ready for the next round. At least seven to nine hours per night of sleep is required if you are really serious about that gain life.

FACT: Boxing is the KING of combat sports! This week, we’re going to share with you some other fun facts that you didn’t know about boxing.
1 In 1949, an official boxing match between a bear and a man was held. The bear won.
An official boxing match between Guis Waldorf and a bear actually took place in 1949. The bear was made to wear boxing gloves and a muzzle to prevent biting. Brutal punches were exchanged until finally the bear slipped in a killer big right! The bear even won a belt for this monstrous win!
2 Archie Moore holds the record for most knockouts.
Archie Moore was the king of knockouts and he was the longest World Light Heavyweight Champion of all time. One hundred and thirty-one of his career 186 victories were by knockouts, the highest recorded in the sport.
3 Boxing gloves are hardcore.
Boxing gloves were introduced into boxing for hits in the head and dramatic knockout effect! That’s a KO!
4 Muhammad Ali never refused an autograph.
When Muhammad Ali was young, he asked Sugar Ray Robinson for an autograph and he refused. It left such a huge impact that he promised himself that he will always give autographs to all his fans.
5 The youngest boxer to win a title is Wilfred Benitez at 17.
At the age of 17, Benitez won his first of three career world titles by a fifteen round split decision in his favour. He was skilled and aggressive!

When you’re in need for a little extra motivation, nothing gets you going better than a kick-a$$ boxing movie! Seeing hardcore characters struggle through adversity and overcome their fears through boxing is truly inspiring.
The Kingsway Boxing team have compiled their top five boxing movies of all time! If you haven’t seen these then what are you even doing with your life?
1. THE HURRICANE
Hate locked him up, but love busted him out. The sad yet brave true story of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a former middleweight contender who spends his prime boxing years doing time for a crime he did not commit. Denzel Washington is phenomenal in The Hurricane and this is hands down one of his best performances. The movie is sad, but so worth a watch for its message on perseverance and inspiration.
FUN FACT! The ring at Kingsway Boxing is originally from this movie.
2. ROCKY 1 – 4
The ultimate underdog story!
Rocky’s soundtrack is our go to training jam! Forget those romantic comedies this Valentine’s Day and have a Rocky marathon. It is Sylvester Stallone’s best performance and a simple true to heart story of a debt collector who is given the chance to fight the superstar champion of the world.
If you haven’t done this marathon and you practice boxing, you need to it ASAP!
3. THE FIGHTER
Starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, heavy pact performances and deep storyline sets this one apart. More than boxing, this movie is also about the importance of love and friendship between two brothers. You will see a lot of different situations and characters coming out of their struggles and hardship through boxing.
Boxing truly does liberate!
4. CREED
Creed is part of the Rocky sequel of boxing movies which focuses on Apollo Creed who, unlike Rocky, comes from a privileged background. If you are not into classics, this is a great film for a modern audience. All the training and fight scenes will get your heart pumping!
5. CINDARELLA MAN
Some of our favourites such as Russell Crowe, Renée Zellweger and Paul Giamatti star in this one! What we admire about this movie is that its about family, hope and perseverance, leaving you feeling inspirational and warm inside. One of the best boxing movies out there.
Fun Fact: Cinderella Man was filmed right here in Toronto. Many of the extras who play the boxers, referees and coaches are close friends to Kingsway Boxing Club.
Did you know that the first bouts in Canada were “bareknuckle” fights and before the 1900s were scheduled for 40 rounds?
Boxing was introduced by the Greeks in the Olympic Games about 686 BC. We have come along way since then and it is important that we acknowledge some of the greatest accomplishments in history made by some incredible boxers during Black History Month.
Racial epithets, such as Langford’s moniker the “Boston Tar Baby,” were commonly used as nicknames for Black boxers in the 19th and 20th century. Such names reflect ideas of racial superiority that are attached to boxing. So, while Black boxers were known as the “Boston Terror” — another Langford nickname — their White competitors were often billed by promotors as being a “Great White Saviour.” It is important we recognize our transgressions and the struggles of these true heroes.
Two of the world’s biggest names in boxing history, George Dixon and Sam Langlord, are from Nova Scotia Canada.
George Dixon, boxer (born 29 July 1870 in Africville, NS; died 6 January 1908 in New York, New York). George Dixon was the first Black world champion in boxing history and the first Canadian to ever win a world championship. Despite his small stature (5 feet 3.5 inches and between 87 and 115 pounds), Dixon amassed several notable accomplishments across a 20-year career and was the first boxer to win championships in multiple weight classes — bantamweight (1890) and featherweight (1891–96; 1897; 1898–1900). A cerebral fighter known as a “pioneer of scientific boxing.”
In 1888, Dixon won what he believed was the world bantamweight championship title in Boston. However, given a lack of organizational structure within boxing’s global governing bodies, other international fighters, such as England’s Nunc Wallace, claimed the title of “world champ” as well. In the summer of 1890, Dixon and long-time manager Tom O’Rourke travelled to England to settle the dispute.
On 27 June, Dixon defeated Wallace via knockout in 18 rounds to be fully recognized as the world champion. In doing so, Dixon became the first Black fighter to be crowned world champion in boxing history. (This may have made him the first Black athlete to win a championship in any sport.) He was also the first Canadian world champion of any weight class.
Sam Langford was born on 4 March, 1886 in Weymouth Falls, Nova Scotia, a small rural community settled by Black loyalists and former slaves, including Langford’s grandfather, William, who fled to Digby County, Nova Scotia.
Despite his short stature (five feet seven inches or 1.71 m tall) Langford was a ferocious puncher with a 73-inch (1.88 m) reach who routinely fought — and beat — boxers larger than him. He also earned a reputation for his willingness to compete in multiple weight classes. Beginning his professional career as a lightweight (up to 135 lbs), he would go on to compete as a welterweight (up to 147 lbs), middleweight (up to 160 lbs) and even heavyweight (unlimited) over his 24 years in boxing, amassing over 300 officially recorded bouts in that time.
On 11 April 1902, Langford made his professional debut, at age 16, in a knockout victory versus Jack McVicker. Within 18 months, he earned his first shot at a title, squaring off against lightweight division champion Joe Gans, the first African-American boxer to win a world championship, on 8 December 1903. Langford won the fight in 15 rounds, but because he weighed slightly above the 135-lb limit was not awarded the belt.
It wasn’t the last time Langford would fall short of a title, suffering a string of unfortunate luck that would linger over his career. On 5 September 1904, he moved up a weight class and fought welterweight champion Joe Walcott. After going the full 15 rounds, the match was called a draw, much to the dismay of those in attendance who saw Langford land numerous blows and out-box his opponent. “The spectators were much displeased by the decision,” New York Illustrated News editor Arthur Lumley reported from ringside, adding that Langford “should have gotten the decision.” On 26 April 1906, Langford fought famed heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, who was in line for the world title and outweighed Langford by at least 20 lbs. It took 15 rounds for Johnson to beat Langford, one of the toughest tests he’d face. Two years later, Johnson won the world championship, but would never agree to fight Langford again for fear he’d lose.
“I don’t want to fight that little smoke. He’s got a chance to win against anyone in the world,” Johnson said of Langford. “I’m the first black [heavyweight] champion and I’m going to be the last.”
Many people are still under the misconception that to burn fat and get fit, you require time and patience… This is simply not true!
Did you know, there are ways to burn more fat and calories by working out for less time instead of more?
With High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), you tap into your maximum performance and end up burning calories efficiently while taking less time. Amazing, right?
Here are our 4 reasons why HIIT and you are made for each other.
1. Workout Efficiency
HIIT is a time-efficient, effective way to train with maximum benefits.
HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is all about intensity and working at near maximum heart rate for a set period of time with short rests in-between. When you work at a high intensity you are using your anaerobic pathways to give you energy boosts and to burn calories, quicker. Not every HIIT session needs to be about cardio though, doing strength training and core focused exercises at maximum effort under time is also a great HIIT workout.
2. Less Investment
Not only are you investing less time, you also don’t need to invest in any equipment! Jumping jacks, high knees, burpees, lunges, squats — it is a world of beautiful bodyweight possibilities that gets your heart rate pumping.
3. Improve Your HMS
HIIT helps to improve the three most important aspects of your body:
H Heart: HIIT puts your heart in an anaerobic zone, pumping loud and proud. Working this hard is really good for your heart, making sure it continues running smoothly as you enter old age.
M Metabolism: Anaerobic exercises increase your metabolic rate! It helps in weight loss and keeps your body healthy inside out.
S Stamina: HIIT has known to increase stamina fast! In a 2006 study, researchers have found that just after eight weeks of doing HIIT workouts, subjects could bicycle twice as long as they could before the study while maintaining the same pace.
Being able to get through challenging, yet achievable HIIT workouts will boost your confidence as you see yourself getting stronger and fitter with time. HIIT pushes you to work harder than you thought possible. The endorphin rush afterwards is just another added perk of this intense workout.

The type of coach you have in your corner can make a world of a difference, helping you move beyond just self-motivation!
Coaches inspire you to change and form long-lasting healthy habits. They play a huge role in whether or not you stick with the sport/activity. In terms of enjoyment and overall performance, having a good coach can make things a lot easier.
Here are the four things you should look out for in a good coach...
1. Drive
Nothing can get you going better than a coach who is driven and passionate about his/her sport. When we’re driven to be the best at something, we can achieve anything. Coaches that love teaching their sport can make or break it for you.
2. Energy and Positivity
High energy and enthusiasm in a coach is what will keep you interested and focused. This contributes to the overall enjoyment factor! A coach also needs to be positive. Everything needs to be done in a constructive way, teaching through encouragement and positive reinforcement.
3. Willingness to Learn
Good coaches will constantly be on the lookout to learn what’s new and expand their knowledge! Rules and techniques gradually change over time, so it’s important that your coach is constantly willing to learn and adapt. Good coaches should also be receptive to feedback!
4. Experience
A coach that has experience will most likely embody all the qualities listed above. Apart from basic credentials, you should look for coaches with advanced training. A coach who has invested in their own training shows commitment and a great deal of time, energy, and effort spent to provide you with top-quality coaching.
Use the fundamentals of boxing to get into the best shape of your life from the comfort of your own home! The Kingsway & Beaver Boxing Coaching Team will be coming to you live from various locations with fun boxing and fitness drills packed into an effective workout for any age or fitness level!
All you need is enough space to drop into burpees and pushups! Maybe bring a water bottle if you decide you need a quick break.
In The Meantime, Keep Your Hands Up… AND CLEAN! 👊

She is heavily involved in the community, however still manages to find the time to travel the world performing with a World Class Magician.

With the current reality we’re facing each day, it is only natural to feel demotivated at times. Let’s change this reality TODAY!
Times like this it can be difficult to stay motivated and invest in yourself. Just thinking about the monotony of our daily routines does not help either. What we all need in our lives, is something that activates our minds and packs a punch (pun intended). An activity that gives you something new to look forward to every day and pushes your limits both mentally and physically.
With so many options out there, here is our list of reasons to give boxing a try.
1. SAY GOODBYE TO WORKOUT BOREDOM
Each boxing session focuses on different movements that double as effective self-defence tactics. Every workout is different as you switch up the exercises so that you never spend too much time doing any one thing!
2. BOXING MAKES YOU SHARP
Research has shown that boxing makes you sharper! The coordination and speed requires your brain to level up, improving focus, memory and the way brain processes information. Your reactions will be off the hook!
3. RELEASE THAT LOCKDOWN STRESS
Boxing is an amazing way to clear your mind and release that pent-up aggression while crushing those fitness goals! Boxing can help you overcome your stress and even focus your anger into a healthy outlet.
4. FULL BODY WORKOUT
Boxing is all about working from your core, legs, hips and shoulders. It essentially works all your muscle groups while at the same time improving focus, coordination and dexterity. Boxing is an awesome combination of aerobic, anaerobic and flexibility that tones your entire body fast!
5. CONFIDENCE
Just knowing how to defend and handle yourself physically helps to boost that confidence level. You might not be able to reach that Mike Tyson level yet, but these classes will surely give you his strut! Boxing is known to have tremendous effect on one’s mental state.
For the first time ever, Kingsway Boxing and Beaver Boxing are partnering up as a fully-operational virtual boxing club!
At Kingsway Boxing Club, it’s our priority to invest in our community, helping to build mental, physical, and emotional strength with each individual who walks through our doors. With programs for all ages and fitness levels, we utilize the sport of boxing to unify our community.
The Beaver Boxing Club is a not-for-profit, provincially-incorporated organization that promotes the development of amateur boxing in the Ottawa region. They offer quality training while advocating for honest sportsmanship and leadership qualities in our coaches and athletes.
With such similar visions, it only made sense to collaborate and work together with Beaver Boxing Club to provide the best experience for our members!
We are now offering recreational, technical, competitive classes, and even special needs programs brought to you by Boxing Without Barriers (BWB). Boxing Without Barriers is a non-contact boxing program for children, youth, and young adults (ages 7+) with special needs. It’s open to individuals with a wide range of abilities and is designed for participants to exercise, learn to box, and have fun.
This will be the first time members of both gyms can benefit from the sport in an online format. Both Kingsway and Beaver Boxing Clubs have been staples in the Boxing Ontario family, with Beaver Boxing being one of the longest-standing clubs in Canada!

Are you still feeling hesitant about switching your normal routine to a virtual one? We hope the following reasons help you feel differently and consider giving virtual training a genuine try.

Re: KINGSWAY BOXING – REQUEST FOR RECONSIDERATION TO OPEN TECHNICAL BOXING PROGRAMS
Dear Municipal, Provincial and Federal Leaders,
We are writing today, to appeal for your reconsideration of boxing gym closures in Toronto; specifically our facilities, Kingsway Boxing Club (KBC) in Etobicoke. We have poured our heart, soul and savings into two separate locations which are now shutdown. This business is our livelihood, we have and will continue to implement every protocol necessary to provide a safe environment. Our initiatives and facilities are integral in the community; we need your help to stand up for us and fight to keep us alive.
Our boxing facilities were pre-approved to safely reopen during the first lockdown, under the strict guidelines and support of our PSO, Boxing Ontario. Our teams have worked tirelessly, enforcing sanctioned safety and cleaning protocols, ensuring the welfare of our families, members, staff and community. Similar to the Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy industries (which remain open), thousands of dollars have been spent on the facility cleaning and COVID protocols. Since March, we have continued to adapt to the heavy government restrictions, reducing our services offered to non-fitness, technical training as private or physically distanced small groups. We have implemented the use of professional antiviral and antibacterial cleaning products for the deep cleaning of our facilities each day, and in between the use of any equipment. All Team KBC Coaches and Trainers complete the Boxing Ontario Safety Protocol Training. We ensure continued training, focused on procedures and protocols to enhance safety as the situation evolves.
KBC is extremely dedicated to the work we do; helping families, grass roots, competitive and healthy living programs, and supporting individuals in need of physical rehabilitation. We continue to employ staff and mentor youth through our competitive and recreational coaching programs. Though we quickly pivoted to a virtual format after the first shutdown in March, we are struggling to sustain two physical locations through these efforts. While we continue to stay connected with our community, the shutdown of our locations is having a devastating effect on the initiatives we have built over the past 15 years; this reality threatens the future of our business and livelihood.
We would like to invite you to visit our facility, to see for yourself, that our protocols go above and beyond that of which are implemented through other businesses, deemed safe to remain open during lockdown in Ontario.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Wishing your family and loved ones safe during this unprecedented time.
Help get back to training by personally contacting your MP. Send a personalized letter using the template below. With your additional contact, we hope to re-open Kingsway Boxing Club locations safely in the Grey Zone. Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate these difficult times.
