Tuesday June 7, 2016 – TORONTO, ON – The 5th Annual Fight To End Cancer Charity Gala (FTEC) was our biggest and most successful year ever! The sold out event was hosted by CTV ETALK’s, Ben Mulroney at the historic Old Mill Inn, in Toronto’s west end. The Gala brought together some of the city’s top executives and influencers, who cheered on our 2016 Fight Team. The fighters consisted of a group of 10 brave men and women, with no prior boxing experience, who stepped into the ring in support of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

The evening was a bittersweet one, which happened to fall on the day when the world lost a true icon from the boxing world, Muhammad Ali. Fight To End Cancer’s 2016 Gala was dedicated to Ali, in honour of the legacy that he left behind both in and outside of the ring.

One of the most exciting bouts of the night was showcased by the Co-Main Event (the female bout of the night’s entertainment). Presenting the awards for this bout was Canadian Olympic-bound boxer, Mandy Bujold who in her own words had this to say:

“It was an honour to present the awards to these ladies who had the courage to step into the ring and fight for this amazing cause. I take my hat off to all the the fighters who took part in this event. I will say the girls fight was one of the most entertaining bouts of the evening. These girls put it all on the line and put on a really skilled bout for the crowd.”

Five sanctioned Olympic-style boxing matches (four male bouts, one female bout) were the perfect celebration for the commitment and hard work of our 2016 fighters. After several months of both training and fundraising, all 10 of our fighters are true champions! An astounding $120,000.00 was raised within their personal networks. Coupled with the night’s additional fundraising efforts at the Gala, we project over $170,000.00 will be directly donated to the Princess Margaret in 2016!

After five years of fundraising efforts, the Fight To End Cancer has successfully managed to raise well over $500,000.00, in direct donations, to the hospital’s foundation, since its inception. As a result of this, Fight To End Cancer is confident that it will reach its goal of raising $1,000,000 for the Princess Margaret by 2018.

Fight To End Cancer’s Executive Director & Founder, Jennifer Huggins, is beyond proud of the hard work and dedication shown by both the Fight Team and Planning Committee, in making 2016’s event an unbelievable success. In her own words:

SW_FTEC2016 FIGHT NIGHT (37 of 57)“The feeling on Saturday was surreal. I wish I could bottle the energy, passion and ultimate ‘togetherness’ that could be felt. It connected every fighter, guest, staff and volunteer in the room – over 700 people, all fighting for the same cause. We have all outdone ourselves this year, yet we feel nothing but inspired to do even more. We are unstoppable. Together, we will knockout cancer in our lifetime – Defeat Is Not An Option!”

THE FTEC2016 FIGHT TEAM ARE READY TO GO TO BATTLE

Knocking Out Cancer in the 5th Annual Fight To End Cancer

The Fight To End Cancer Media Day & Weigh-ins has become a much anticipated event of its own. The Official Media Day is for our supporters to help build up excitement,  just days before our fighters step into the ring at our annual Charity Boxing Gala. With each passing year, the amount of support shown to our fighters has continuously grown and this past Thursday, May 26th, was easily our biggest weigh-ins ceremony ever!

The weigh-ins event was hosted by our friends at the Brazen Head Irish Pub in Liberty Village, Toronto. Giving us full access to their entire second level space (including two patios), the rave reviews kept pouring in from our guests on how impressed they were by the “sweet new digs”. The staff were a true pleasure to work with and made everyone feel welcome (shout out to Adrian Murphy – a bartender who donated all of his tips for the night, back to support Main Event Fighter Craig Lauzon!). Adding further emphasis to the awesome atmosphere was having the folks from Z103.5 radio station (Fight To End Cancer‘s Official Media Partner) on-site, blasting cool tunes, out front, to welcome guests upon arrival.

With a jam-packed house of our top-tier sponsors, family, friends, local media personalities and maybe even a celebrity, or two (wait, was that Karl Wolf?)…our 2016 Fight Team put on a fantastic show for the audience and truly were the stars of the evening.

Following some powerful speeches, including but not limited to: Jim Mosher (Landscape Plus Ltd.), Brendhan Malone (Eagle Professional Resources & 2014 FTEC Fighter) and Paige Cunningham (Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation & 2015 FTEC Fighter), each of the five bouts for FTEC2016 took their turn up to the stage to have their official weigh-ins done, with plenty of opportunity to “face-off” for one last stare down & “smack talk” session (all in good fun).

Our 2016 Fight Team will be stepping into the ring this Saturday, June 4, 2016 for our 5th Annual Fight To End Cancer Charity Gala, benefiting the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Please join us in congratulating them on all of the time, energy, fundraising and hard work they have put into training at the Kingsway Boxing Club.

This brave group consisting of eight men and two women will be celebrated this Saturday night for all they have done for this cause and for what they still have yet to accomplish in the ring.  As excited as we are to see these matches occur, there is one thing that is already certain; no matter whose hand is raised in victory inside of the ring…they are all winners in the Fight To End Cancer.

MANDY BUJOLD JOINS THE FIGHT TO END CANCER ON THE ROAD TO RIO

Mandy Bujold is one of the top athletes in the world and has dedicated her life to both the sport of boxing and her country. Her career and success in boxing has been an inspiration to the Fight To End Cancer, since its conception. Jennifer Huggins, founder of Fight To End Cancer (FTEC), has been working closely with Mandy for years, sharing the ring with her as a referee for many of her fights. In Jennifer’s own words, she shares how Mandy’s strength and dominance in the sport of boxing has inspired her:

51kg Women’s Elite Boxing GOLD Medalist posing with Abbey after her fight in the Pan Am Games. Abbey’s Mom Dawn Ramsey-Brown fought in the 2014 Fight To End Cancer.

“Mandy has been a true ambassador of the sport, inspiring our own FTEC family and friends. Her dedication and perseverance led to achieving her ultimate dream of making it to the Olympics. She has influenced athletes around the world to achieve their dreams and to step into the ring to fight for what you believe in. After Mandy attended the Fight To End Cancer Gala in 2015, our FTEC team cheered her on ringside at the PanAm Games, in Toronto, where she won Canada Gold.”

A key component to the Fight To End Cancer Gala, is the promotion of women in boxing. Through this initiative, each year’s co-Main Event features a female bout, which always proves to be the “fight of the night”. Last year, we were honoured to have Mandy attend our Gala, as a medal presenter for our co-Main Event – featuring voice actress, Erica McMaster and Paige Cunningham, from the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic games and working tirelessly to achieve her dreams, Mandy has a lot to fight for. Though she has her hands full with 4-6 hour training days, Mandy still finds the time to join us in the Fight To End Cancer.

“Cancer has affected some of the most important people in my life and it’s a disease that affects many people on a daily basis. I lost my grandfather to cancer when I was young and seeing what he went through, truly affected me. To have the opportunity to “fight” cancer through Fight to End Cancer and the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation is my way of fighting for those family members and friends I’ve lost to cancer.”

We are so proud to have Mandy representing Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and we are honoured to have her as an ambassador of the Fight To End Cancer.

About Mandy Bujold

Mandy Bujold (born July 25, 1987) is a Canadian amateur boxer, whose career was launched following a successful 2006 when she claimed the Canadian National Championship and Boxer of the Year titles. Weighing in at 51 kg (112 lbs.), she has made her way as a Fly Weight Champion, with a trail of titles and victories following her. Included amongst her many achievements are: 9 Canadian National Championships, 3 Continental Championships, a Gold medal at the first Pan-American Games and a Bronze medal at the first Commonwealth Games that included women’s boxing. Most recently during the Toronto 2015 Pan-American Games, Mandy successfully defended her title and became the only female boxer in history to win two Pan American Games titles.

Mandy’s dedication and discipline have made her a great competitor and ambassador for the sport. She was an ambassador for the Pan-American Games 2015 (Toronto, Canada) and now earned her ticket to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; where she will be fighting for GOLD at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

FEATURED FIGHTER | CORY RAYMOND

Leading up to Fight Night we will be featuring one of the incredible men and women who have joined the Fight to End Cancer in support of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Meet our #FeaturedFighter, Cory Raymond, Sponsored by Z103.5

c-raymondIt’s time to meet our final #FeaturedFighter from the Main Event, Cory ‘One Punch’ Raymond.  Cory is a Lead Project Manager for PCL Constructors Canada Inc. Cory was introduced to the Fight to End Cancer by his friend and co-worker Sean Donovan who was one of our 2015 Main Event fighters. We asked Cory what FTEC means to him.

“It means hope. Knowing there is hope. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to do something that allows me to get in shape while being a part of something much bigger! I know and have heard of  too many people being on the bad end of this horrible disease. It means hope!

Cory has set a staggering fundraising goal of $40,000, which he intends to reach by June 4th for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. So far he is 32% of the way there – that means that he need your help to reach this massive goal before Fight Night! You can support Cory directly HERE.

IMG_4419“I am still amazed at the gross impact of this disease on a day to day basis and frustrated by its reach! I am fighting because I can, because the last plug I want to see pulled is on cancer! Not a dying relative or friend!

I am proud to be part of this campaign and though I realize alone I can’t end cancer,  together with the team I have joined we can definitely provide a positive impact to the research of this horrible disease.”

Unfortunately, like many, Cory is fighting for his many loved ones that have been touched by cancer and many lost too soon, including his Uncle Mike who is currently fighting and friend Keith Walls who is in remission.

How is your training going so far? Any surprises?

“Training is going well. It is a little overwhelming at times but I think it will all come together with consistent training.

I think it will be a fair and reasonable fight. But I have to say, the fear of losing is far greater than the want to win. “

FEATURED FIGHTER | CRAIG LAUZON

Leading up to Fight Night we will be featuring one of the incredible men and women who have joined the Fight to End Cancer in support of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Meet our #FeaturedFighter, Craig Lauzon, sponsored by Make It Happen Media

c-lauzon

With just weeks left before the Fight to End Cancer 5th annual gala, we are excited to be featuring our MAIN EVENT fighters of the night, starting with Mr. Craig ‘Fix Yo Face’ Lauzon.

Craig is an actor, comedian and writer who you may recognize as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Farce or from one of his many stage or stand-up performances across Canada. Craig was on our radar as a possible fighter last year along side his partner and FTEC2015 Co-Main event fighter Erica McMaster.

“I had the opportunity to take part in this event last year and had to pull out early on. At the time two of my friends were fighting cancer and today only one them is here. I won’t let that happen again.”

Craig has had to stand by and watch many of his friends, family and colleagues fight cancer over the years and didn’t want to miss this chance to take action.

“Throughout every stage of my life someone I have known and loved has been taken by cancer, from school chums to family members to colleagues and friends. Two years ago I lost my hero and mentor, August Schellenberg, to lung cancer...

I have never not known someone dealing with it. The very least I could do is help them try and kick it’s ass.”

IMG_3643Craig is working to reach his fundraising goal of $10, 000, every cent of which will go directly to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation! At this point Craig is 54% of the way to his goal, but needs your support in making the 10k a reality. Help support Craig HERE.

Although he has so many loved ones in mind through the preparations for FTEC2016, Craig has dedicated his fight to his hero and mentor August Schellenberg.

“Sadly there are almost too many to name but the main person I’m doing this for is August Schellenberg. He was a hero of mine. We worked together on his dream project and a year later he was gone, lung cancer. He was a golden gloves boxer as a young man.”

How is your training going so far? Any surprises?

“I’m sore all the time..and never in the same places I don’t know how Jen and Virg do it but they make you hurt everywhere all the time.”

How do you see the fight going?

“…I grew up in a rough area and went to a couple of rough school and have been in a lot of fights in my youth. Although fist fights are not even close to learning the beautiful art of boxing I do know what it is like to get punched…in the face…hard. That won’t surprise me. I punch hard so I see the fight going that way…me puching him hard and often.”

We can’t wait to see our Main Event fighters in the ring! Can’t make it to the gala? ORDER THE LIVE STREAM to see all our fighters live on June 4th.

FEATURED FIGHTER | SAMANTHA KRYSTANTOS

Leading up to Fight Night we will be featuring one of the incredible men and women who have joined the Fight to End Cancer in support of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Meet our #FeaturedFighter, Samantha Krystantos, Sponsored by City Alliance

s-krysantos

Meet featured fighter Samantha ‘The Assasin’ Krystantos. Sam will be facing Natasa in our Co-Main Event and featured female bout of the evening.

Sam is a University student perusing her degree in Social Work as well as working at Gymborree Play and Music with 16 month-5 year olds, but her gentle exterior can be deceiving…

“I may be small and sweet but underneath this layer lies a true Ninja!”

And she isn’t joking! Having trained in karate since the young age of 3, Sam is no newbie to sport training and performance under pressure. When interview by The Female Coaching Network for Fight to End Cancer takeover week, Sam shared the differences between her competitive Martial Arts training and the training for her boxing debut at the 5th annual Fight to End Cancer charity gala.

IMG_3620

“Karate was a sport that I did for myself…boxing has allowed me to take a different stance because I am not only fighting for myself, but I am fighting on behalf of those who didn’t get a fighting chance and had Cancer defeat them. My mission has always been to fight, but now I am able to fight for what I really want… a future without Cancer!”

Sam is a ‘third generation’ FTEC Fighter (so-to-speak). Her father Mitch Krystantos was in our Main Event at the 2014 gala and Sam’s uncle Ryan Morris fought in our event last year.

“Growing up as a little girl the word Cancer was always an open topic of conversation. My dad was a volunteer at Sick Kids hospital for over 16 years…

Through his experiences there he came home to talk to me about what its like being apart of an organization and helping others. My father’s passion to help others left a mark on me growing up…”

KRY
Samantha with her father Mitch and the FTEC 2015 Team live on Breakfast Television with Jennifer Valentyne.

Sam’s goal is to raise $10,000 for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation by June 4th 2016. This impressive goal isn’t too far out of reach as she has already reached 67% of her goal. Help Sam get to 100% by making a donation HERE!

How is your training going so far? Any surprises?

Every time I come to class I commit and put everything I have into training. I realized that not only is boxing a very technical sport, but it also requires a lot of cardio and conditioning. I will push myself harder than I ever have and I know I will be ready on June 4th…no doubt in my mind.

COMMITTEE FEATURE: DAVID KELLY

The Fight To End Cancer is made possible by many people – our sponsors, fighters, but also, our volunteers and committee members. We want to take you behind the scenes of #FTEC2016, to meet the people who are fighting cancer outside of the ring…

INTRODUCING FTEC’S PR DIRECTOR

DAVID KELLY

How did you get involved with Fight To End Cancer?

David1DK: I was invited to attend the inaugural Fight To End Cancer Gala back in 2012.  My spouse and I were invited to sit at one of Eagle Professional Resources’ tables, as guests of theirs and after hearing about what the event was going to be like, we were both very excited to check out such a unique event that raises funds for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. I fell in love with the event right away and knew that I wanted to get more involved.  Then, in 2013 after attending, for the second year in a row, Jennifer Huggins sent out an email that was an open call to build an actual planning committee.  I immediately sent Jennifer an email with my resume and inquired if she might benefit from having a communications person on her team. Her response…”YES!! :)”
David has been part of FTEC since the beginning, first as a guest and now as an integral part of the planning and execution of the Fight to End Cancer. “I feel as though it has become my adopted child and it is incredible to watch it grow bigger and better, with each passing year.  It barely feels like the same event from 2012.  It’s exciting to think about what the next five years will bring for Fight To End Cancer.”

Why is the Fight To End Cancer important to you?

DK: Personally, I have been lucky to have not lost anyone close to me from cancer.  My grandmother had colon cancer when I was very young; but thankfully, she was able to have surgery that removed the portion of her colon that had the cancer in it and she lived for another 20 years.  Cancer is something that has, or will, affect everyone at some point in his or her life. That’s a scary thought. The thought of being able to live in a world without cancer in our lifetime is something that is very encouraging and something I want to see happen. I didn’t get into the Fight To End Cancer because of a personal hardship, or loss – I got into the Fight To End Cancer because I believe that there is hope for a cancer-free future for everyone and I want to be a part of helping see it become a reality.

What is your position with FTEC?

DK: I am the Public Relations Director for FTEC. In my role, I am responsible for the creation of FTEC’s communication materials (press releases, web articles, newsletters, etc.), all of our media relations activities (trying to secure coverage for the brand and the fighters) the development of ongoing communications/marketing strategies, event logistics, sponsor relations, assisting in securing new sponsorship opportunities, brand management, etc.

It has been such a pleasure to work with Jennifer, as closely as I do, to help in the constant development of FTEC and looking at new and exciting ways to build and enhance our reach to the world. I have learned so much in such a short time and I am always awaiting what great, new (maybe crazy?) challenge Jennifer will present me with next!

David2

(Virgil Barrow and David Kelly interviewing FTEC 2016 Co-Main event fighter Natasa Jamnik-Sousa)

Tell us about a day in the life of you.

DK: I don’t like these types of questions…makes me realize how boring my day-to-day life can be…well, outside of my responsibilities with FTEC – you can typically find me at the gym in the morning (when I force myself to go), taking my dog Stewart out for a walk down by the lake, I love to read my favourite blogs and newspapers with a coffee/latte, writing, cooking, shopping, and just enjoying my time and life with my spouse…I have also begun working on another fundraiser for the Covenant House and am always on the look out for what will come next for me.

As a final thought, I just have to say what an honor it is to be a part of Fight To End Cancer and to work with Jennifer and the rest of the planning committee.  Everyone who is involved in this event, both inside and outside of the ring, should be commended for all of the hard work that they put into making our annual Gala, such an incredible success.  Being a part of this team has been truly life changing and I am so proud to work with the people that I do.

David has been such an important part of growing Fight to End Cancer over the past three years and we can’t thank him enough for all the dedication, professionalism, and talent he brings to FTEC every day! Thank-you David!

The 2016 Fight To End Cancer (FTEC) is made up of 10 fighters, an army of support staff, volunteers and a family bound together with one common goal; ending cancer. In five short years, we have assembled a team of 52 fighters, thousands of staff, sponsors and guests.  With every passing day, we are reminded that our FTEC family is made up of true champions. From the fighters who dedicate a year of their lives to stepping in the ring, to the small businesses and artists, like painter Linda Bradbeer, who donates personal items to help us raise funds at our gala.

Linda, an established artist from Toronto, felt the need to do more to help her friend Craig Lauzon, who is fighting in our 2016 FTEC Charity Boxing Gala. After donating to his personal page, she felt compelled to express her support in the best way she knew how. Read her words below to learn about the love that went into the painting Life Of The Party that will be available at the 2016 Fight To End Cancer Gala.

We are all a part of the fight to end cancer and we feel so fortunate to have such a strong team to fight with us!

“My partner is comedienne Martha Chaves and we have Craig Lauzon in our comedy family.  A few weeks ago, Martha and Craig worked together on a gala show in the Winnipeg Comedy Festival.  I was watching backstage with Craig’s partner Erica McMaster.  She told me that Craig was going to participate in “The Fight to End Cancer” this year so I asked if I could help too. She also told me what a powerful effect it had on her when she participated in 2015.  I made a financial donation to his page but wanted to do more.  That is when I asked if I could donate of my paintings. Erica put me in touch with Betty Ann and here I am!

Linda BradbeerI have lost family, friends, and even pets to cancer.  Almost 4 years ago, I lost my childhood best-friend Kathy to a very rare ovarian cancer.  Sadly she was diagnosed with cancer about 20 years earlier and had a very difficult journey over the next two decades.  Yet Kathy was always smiling and had an incredible sense of living life to the fullest.  She inspired everyone who met her. I was lucky in that I knew her for 45 years. To me, she was the life of the party, so I named my painting after Kathy.  I am donating “Life of the Party” – 12″x12″, acrylics.

I work in an office by day and paint at night.  I started creating abstract paintings about 8 years ago.”

FEATURED FIGHTER | NATASA JAMNIK-SOUSA

Leading up to Fight Night we will be featuring one of the incredible men and women who have joined the Fight to End Cancer in support of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Meet our #FeaturedFighter, Natasa Jamnik-Sousa, Sponsored by RV Law LLP

n-jamnik

Our Co-Main event of the evening is brought to you by Eagle Staffing and features two lovely ladies (outside of the ring).

Meet featured fighter Natasa ‘Bad Intentions’ Jamnik-Sousa. Natasa works for RV Law LLP in the capacity of a law clerk for Marshall Reinhart and Antonietta Raviele. “I’m basically their Donna (for those of you Suits fans).”

RV Law LLP have sponsored Natasa and will be in her corner June 4th.

“… I am not an aggressive person by nature, this is a fight I could not pass up as all the proceeds raised will go towards cancer research.

Cancer is a word I despise with every fiber of my being. Unfortunately, it is a word that my family and I know all too well.”

Natasa and her family have had countless loved ones affected by cancer – many surviving, some still fighting and unfortunately, three family members that lost their battle. Natasa will be dedicating her fight to them.

Natasa3“14 years ago I lost my sister to osteo sarcoma (the same type of cancer as Terry Fox). She was my older and only sister. The pain of experiencing such a loss at the young age of 17 is immeasurable. Most recently my aunt lost the fight against cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and fought valiantly until her last breath.  My grandfather, unfortunately is another member of my family who I lost to cancer.”

Natasa has been a dedicated volunteer with the Fight to End Cancer since our second annual gala and has been hoping for a chance to get more involved ever since. This was her year to jump in the ring and she hasn’t taken the opportunity lightly.

IMG_4379

Natasa set a fundraising goal of $10, 000 which she intends to reach by Fight Night on June 4th. She is 54% of the way and needs your support. Make a donation towards Natasa’s goal HERE. All donations go directly to the PMCF and receive a tax receipt.

“Losing someone to cancer is one of the most devastating occurrences to have happen in your life. When you experience a loss of this magnitude, there is a void that can never be filled.”

How is your training going so far? Any surprises?

“I am learning to take my training a day at a time. It is very easy to get overwhelmed by the technical component of the sport of boxing as there are a lot of things you need to be mindful of. One of the more difficult things for me has been to stop putting unneeded pressure on myself. I have exceedingly high expectations about the things I would like to achieve and the skills I need to obtain for same. I am trying to be more in the present and take/react to each punch as it comes.”

Good advice in any situation if you ask us. Support Natasa in her fundraising and be sure to

ORDER THE LIVE STREAM to see all our fighters June 4th.

Meet our #FeaturedFighter, Kyle Barlow, Sponsored by Kingsway Boxing

k-barlow

Kyle ‘The Butcher’ Barlow will be stepping into the ring on June 4th to face Jeff MacWilliams (thanks to our friends at RG Speed Control). Kyle has been thinking about boxing for years and when he heard about #FTEC2015 Fighter Georgia’s story through his girlfriend, he knew he couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

? “I have been contemplating for years to start boxing. I always loved watching it… what an opportunity to fight for such a wonderful cause!

Kyle set an ambitious fundraising goal for himself – $20, 000. But with just over a month to go, he is 85% of the way there! He’s raised a lot of money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation so far and is looking for those final contributions to get him the rest of the way!

You can make a donation towards Kyle’s goal HERE.

We talked to Kyle about his training so far and asked him if there have been any surprises?

“Training so far has been a blast. Every class challenges me to better myself and push the limit. Biggest surprise – I thought I was in shape, but every class I am dripping in sweat. I also didn’t realize I would have permanent blisters on my feet.”

Kyle is dedicating his fight to his grandparents, who have all fought and survived cancer.

KYLE“Like most, I have had many family members and loved ones endure a fight with cancer.  This event gives me the opportunity to show them that I am in this fight with them; spiritually and physically. I am dedicating this fight to my grandparents. All of them have fought cancer and are still alive thanks to the miracles of modern medicine and a fighting attitude.”

How do you see the fight going June 4th?

“I think we will be the fight of the night. We are both athletic, love pushing ourselves and are stubborn as hell.”

a-wulffOur 3rd bout of Fight Night, June 4th will be Andrea Wulff vs. Jason McGuire, which is brought to you by our good friends at Tip Top Tailors. Andreas works as a steel stud framer in highrise residential condos for Marel Contractors. He was introduced to the Fight to End Cancer through #FTEC2015 Co-Main Event fighter Paige.

? “I actually met [Paige] through mutual friends before her fight last year and I heard her story. It made me really want to try.

Andreas is looking to raise $10, 000 by fight night. This is a big goal and with every single cent going towards the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, it is sure to make a difference. You can make a donation towards Andreas’ goal HERE.

When we spoke with Andreas we wanted to know how training was going with Kingsway Boxing and how he felt about the actual upcoming fight.

“The training is going amazing, I’m mostly surprised how much I’ve actually learned in such a short amount of ? My height and reach are advantages for sure, but as for how the fight will go, you never know really –  it’s boxing.”

Andreas decided not to dedicate his fight to any one single person, but instead to fight in the name of those who don’t have a choice but to fight.

“I feel like this is a very important fight for everyone who has or one day may get Andreasthe news about the big ‘C’. Sometimes I feel if I got the news I’d hope people would be out there giving their everything like I am for this fight on June 4th. My farfar (Danish for fathers father) got cancer when I was young. I just want everyone to still have their loved ones everyday.”

Any advice for your opponent leading up to June 4th?

A WORD FROM THE SPONSORS OF THE FIGHT TO END CANCER

FEATURED FIGHTER | JASON MCGUIRE

Leading up to Fight Night we will be featuring one of the incredible men and women who have joined the Fight to End Cancer in support of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Meet our #FeaturedFighter, Jason McGuire, sponsored by Century 21

jason-m

Our second bout of the night will feature Jason McGuire vs. Andreas Wulff. Jason is the owner of Real Property Management Service, a husband and most recently a father to newborn Aimée. Jason along with his extended family have attended the Fight to End Cancer gala every year and this year he knew he wanted to step up.

Jason has set himself an epic fundraising goal of $20, 000! With just about 6 weeks left of both training and fundraising he is looking for support in getting those dollars for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Donate towards Jason’s goal HERE!

“Both Jennifer (my wife) and myself, have family that has cancer and have to live with it every day. While this is not something that people want or like to talk about it, open discussion is needed.

Jason is dedicating his fight to him grandmother Yvonne, who is a six year  breast cancer survivor and to his daughter Aimée.

“This year we are proud to [welcome] our first child into this world.  I want to make sure that Jasoncancer is not something she will ever have to worry about in her life. We have the ability to solve many problems in today’s world and cancer is one that effects so many people.  This is why I want to fight, this is why I want to put an end to cancer!”

This year interest in FTEC broke records with countless of interested everyday heroes looking to join the fight. “Hundreds of worthy people applied. I truly believe my name was drawn from a hat,” said Jason of his initial involvement with the Fight to End Cancer.
“…I’m in the best shape of my life (a small pear shape)! Going to the gym 4+ days a week is intense. The late nights and long hours are really hard to adjust to. A typical night at the gym is 2-3 hours of different activities meant to tire out each muscle group… I’m hopeful it will all come together for me in the end and I will inspire future fighters as I was inspired.”

Now the only question is, who’s got the better arm in the family, Aimée or dad?

FEATURED FIGHTER | KAEL CRUZ

Leading up to Fight Night we will be featuring one of the incredible men and women who have joined the Fight to End Cancer in support of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Meet our #FeaturedFighter, Kael Cruz, Sponsored by Combustion

k-cruzMeet Kael ‘Smooth Killa’ Cruz. Kael is an Art Director at Public Inc., a marketing/advertising agency focused on the world of social good. Kael is always on the lookout for ways to positively impact society and after being inspired by his mentor and 2015 fighter Leslie Ehm, Kael knew he wanted in!

? “She inspired me to be a fighter this year. Thankfully, I made the team! It’s a once in a lifetime chance to join a cause that will always be worth fighting for. How many people get to be an FTEC fighter? Not everyone, that’s for certain.”

We talked with Kael about training and asked him what, if any surprises he’s encoutered so far.

“As far as surprises, I’m a bit surprised at how fast paced it is. I’m also surprised and really happy about how supportive everyone has been. Even during sparring, you feel like the Kingsway Boxing fam is trying to help you and make sure you’re better That kind of camaraderie isn’t that common in most sports”

KAELIn 2010 Kael lost his friend Linus to cancer and will be dedicating his fight to him.

“I’m fighting to honour Linus and how he made the life of his friends and loved ones much brighter. The world got a little less brighter, when cancer took him away. And I’m fighting to make sure we can live in a world where that type o darkness won’t exist anymore.”

Kael is working towards a fundraising goal of $10,000. The #FTEC Fighters are all raising money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and are looking for your support! Kael is nearly 20% of the way towards his goal! Please support Kael by make a donation HERE.

What advantage do you think you have over your opponent and how do you see you fight going?

“I’m older and feel like I’ve dodged a few more punches, metaphorically, throughout my days.
I’m wiser and I’m crafty. It’ll pay off in the end. Think Luke Skywalker vs Yoda.
I’m not trying to say I’m older and shorter, but…you know. I’m alluding to the wiser and craftier part.”

IN YOUR CORNER | EAGLE PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES

FEATURE PARTNER | EAGLE PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES

The Fight To End Cancer (FTEC) is honoured to once again count on the support of Eagle Professional Resources, Canada’s leading professional staffing company, as one of our our top-tier partners.

NT-2423-2
Left To Right: Brendhan Malone and Shane Lewis-Stirling after Brendhan’s Victory in the Fight To End Cancer 2014.

This will be the fourth time welcoming Eagle as an Official Partner for our Gala.  Stepping things up in 2014, Eagle chose to become FTEC’s Lead Partner when Eagle’s own, Brendhan Malone, stepped into the ring to fight. Since then, Eagle has consistently returned as a major sponsor for the Fight To End Cancer and we are truly grateful for their ongoing support.

The relationship between FTEC and Eagle goes even further back then in 2014. They have been an incredible support system to FTEC, right from the beginning. Since day one, Eagle has been in attendance cheering on the courageous fighters who step into the ring and have helped spread the word about our event and the important cause that it is helping to raise funds for.

Eagle Professional Resources is owned and run by Kevin Dee; a long time believer in the importance of literally fighting to find a cure for cancer. Prior to his and Eagle’s attendance at the inaugural FTEC gala; Kevin was preparing diligently for his own boxing bout against cancer when he took part as a fighter at the Fight for the Cure event held in Ottawa, in 2011.

It was then and there that FTEC’s Founder and owner of Kingsway Boxing Club, Jennifer Huggins, first met Kevin. Jennifer worked as a coach in Kevin’s corner for the Olympic-style boxing competition. Kevin shares his thoughts on Eagle’s consistent support for the Fight To End Cancer:

“This event provides much needed exposure and financial support to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, and its fight to end cancer. It is because of Jennifer Huggins’ vision and drive that this event happens and I am proud to be able to play a part in the event’s success. I’m looking forward to an elegant evening with great food, great company and great entertainment.”

It is through the ongoing support of our fantastic sponsors that Fight To End Cancer continues to be as successful as it is.

A big thank you to Kevin Dee and the entire Eagle Professional Resources team!

TRUE HEROES IN THE FIGHT TO END CANCER
ANNOUNCING OUR 2016 FIGHT TEAM

THURSDAY, APRIL 21, 2016 — TORONTO, ON – The Fight To End Cancer (FTEC) is proud to announce its official 2016 Fight Team, benefiting the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. After months of training in sanctioned, Olympic-style boxing; this group of 10 white-collar men and women, with no previous boxing experience, will be stepping into our ring for the 5th Annual Fight To End Cancer Charity Gala on Saturday, June 4, 2016, hosted by Ben Mulroney at Toronto’s historic Old Mill Inn.

In addition to a regimented training schedule, three days per week, our fighters are also working hard to raise donation dollars for their team’s overall goal of $200,000. This team is made up of a group of extremely special people, including: Aboriginal Canadian Actor – Craig Lauzon of the CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce and Sam Krystantos, who will be fighting in support of Sarah Watkin’s family of Sarah’s Drive For Hope (and who’s also following in the footsteps of her father, Mitch Krystantos – FTEC 2014 fighter).

Another key figure on our team is Jennifer Huggins, FTEC’s Founder & Executive Director. Jennifer works hard to keep the campaign on track, as she travels the world as an AIBA International 3-Star Boxing Referee. Following a recent trip for the African Olympic Qualifiers, in Cameroon, Africa; her latest assignment will take her to Astana, Kazakhstan, for the Women’s World Championships, at the end of May. This tournament will bring together top female boxers from around the world that will be competing for placement in the Rio 2016 Olympics. Recently, Jennifer has been announced, by AIBA, as one of only eight ambassadors internationally whom will be representing women’s boxing, in Astana.

In combination with her network in Canada and around the world, Jennifer has been overwhelmed by the support that has been shown for the Fight To End Cancer. In her own words:

“Fighting cancer was a personal decision I made over five years ago. It touches me beyond words to have built this vision that others are willing to literally fight for. We have had over 50 fighters since our first year in 2011, along with hundreds of sponsors, countless volunteers and thousands of guests.  Through this constant support, our mission to ‘knock out cancer in our lifetime’ will become a reality.”

With each passing year, the Fight To End Cancer is increasingly approached by many who have been touched by cancer and want to step into our ring to fight for such an important cause. Together, we will knock out cancer. Defeat is not an option!

? “The challenge of the sport was something I quickly gained an appreciation for. Since then it has been a goal of mine to train and fight in an amateur bout at least once in my life. When I found out about the Fight to End Cancer charity event, it definitely spoke out to me as an important cause to fight for.”

Vignesh’s father has fought and beat cancer twice and is a survivor in part due to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. “That is proof that our efforts to fight back are working. And we will continue to progress with newer developments in the field of cancer research. With your help, I hope to reach my fundraising goal and make a difference.”

“The Fight to End Cancer is basically a unique opportunity to raise money to battle a disease that will affect us all, either directly or indirectly, at some point in our lives. The Fight to End Cancer is an amazing charity event that brings people of a lot of different avenues of life together and is something I am definitely honoured to be a part of.”

VIG

We asked Vignesh what he thought of his opponent Kael Cruz. “His hair NEVER gets messed up during training. Not the slightest bit. I swear, I think his defense for his head will be on point just to protect those beautiful locks. Body shots might be my only option!”

Vignesh, along with the rest of the #FTEC Fighters, is raising money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. He is almost 70% of the way towards his $10,000 fund raising goal and we want to see him get all the way there! Please make a donation and help Vignesh HERE.

So far Vignesh has been pretty creative in his fundraising pleas. He has offered himself up as the human jukebox (requests for $50) and recently put together this video of his FTEC Journey. Take a look!

“I am dedicating my fight to my dad who has battled cancer twice and is a survivor thanks to the help of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. I am fighting in FTEC 2016 so that people like my dad can fight. ”

XEROX CANADA | TRUE HEROES IN THE FIGHT TO END CANCER

INTRODUCING OUR FIRST OFFICIAL SPONSOR | IN OUR CORNER SINCE 2012

It is through the ongoing support of our highly-valued sponsors that allows Fight To End Cancer (FTEC) to continue being one of Toronto’s most prestigious fundraisers. One of these sponsors, in particular, is Xerox.

Our friends over at Xerox have proudly supported the Fight To End Cancer, since its inaugural year back in 2012, as our Official Print Partner.

As our Official Print Partner, Xerox has generously provided us printing services on all of our marketing materials; posters, banners, tickets, magazines etc., for a fraction of the cost. With each year, Xerox has consistently increased their level of support to us and the service they provide helps in making the experience for our guests, truly special.

The relationship between Xerox and Fight To End Cancer was first formed through a personal friendship between Xerox’s Business Development Executive for Xerox Services, Erin Schnepper, and FTEC’s Founder, Jennifer Huggins. Erin was instrumental in helping to develop the relationship with Xerox by introducing the concept of Fight To End Cancer to her colleagues.

Jennifer expressed the relationship Erin helped develop between Xerox and FTEC, as very special:

“I called up Erin one day and asked if she could meet. Without hesitation, or even knowing what the meeting was about, Erin proposed we meet that afternoon. Not only did Erin help facilitate a relationship that was integral to the success of the Fight To End Cancer, she also helped us secure our first official sponsor. She and Xerox are true heroes in the Fight To End Cancer.”

In her own words, Erin shares what it means for Xerox to be a part of the Fight To End Cancer:

“Xerox is proud to continue to sponsor the Fight To End Cancer, as we have since the inaugural event. Every one of us have been impacted by cancer. It is a cause that continues to impact our Xerox and personal communities. We believe the work that Jennifer Huggins and her team are committed to, is not only worthwhile, but necessary. As Winston Churchill said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” We all need to believe and demonstrate with our attitudes that we can find a cure for cancer. That’s what the Fight To End Cancer does. Corporate and community support is critical to enable the Princess Margaret to continue their quest for success in the fight to end cancer. Please give generously.”

Thank you for your ongoing support Xerox!

A WORD FROM THE SPONSORS OF THE FIGHT TO END CANCER

JULIE VAN DUZEN | A TRUE HERO IN THE FIGHT TO END CANCER

The Fight To End Cancer is made possible by many people – our sponsors, fighters, but also, our volunteers and committee members. We want to take you behind the scenes of #FTEC2016, to meet the people who are fighting cancer outside of the ring…

OUR HERO IN THE FIGHT TO END CANCER | JULIE VAN DUZEN

Will Chase - IMG_1356How did you get involved with Fight To End Cancer?

JV: I got involved with the Fight to End Cancer in 2013. Rob Gorican was fighting and introduced me to Jennifer Huggins. Jen was looking for a Stage Manager for the event and I have been Stage Managing for the last 17 years.

This will be Julie’s 4th year with FTEC as the Stage Manager for the gala event held at the Old Mill Inn in Toronto. “I work closely with Rob and Jen helping to execute the production part of the evening,” Julie notes. If you have ever attended a FTEC gala, you have seen Julie’s handy work in the cueing, lighting, and overall execution of the gala.

Why is the Fight To End Cancer important to you?

Julie4

Julie3JV: I got involved with FTEC in 2013. Jen was looking for a Stage Manager and the opportunity was presented to me. This came at a challenging time for me and my then fiancé Geoff. Geoff had just been diagnosed with brain cancer. He had undergone surgery to remove the tumor and was going through radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

I felt helpless watching him go through this and wishing there was more I could do.  Having the opportunity to work on the Fight To End Cancer that first year helped me to feel like I was actively doing something to help him as he was going through his cancer battle. Geoff attended the Fight To End Cancer the first year I was involved. For us that was a small victory. He had just finished his radiation treatment and we were moving forward with our lives the best we could. We were married 3 months later and this past November we just had our first baby, Henry. We have come along way in the last 3 years since Geoff’s cancer diagnosis.

Our lives are what they are because of research done by places like Princess Margaret Hospital. Geoff now helps out with the cancer benefit.  This is a project that we both feel so passionately about and are so happy to be a part the of FTEC team.

Tell us about a day in the life of you.

JV:Julie5

I work as a Hearing Instrument Specialist as well as Stage Managing for community and professional theatre companies.

Right now I am off on maternity leave. We are so blessed to have Henry in our lives. After Geoff’s chemo and radiation treatments we weren’t sure that we would be able to have children. My days are filled with cuddles and smiles and laughs from our little miracle baby.

Julie6

Thank-you to Julie for four great years working behind the scenes for the Fight To End Cancer.

We are so grateful for all your hard work and the passion you bring to the gala evening and are so grateful for everything you and your family have done for our cause!

ANNOUNCEMENT: ETALK’S BEN MULRONEY TO HOST FIGHT TO END CANCER 2016!

Ben Mulroney_ ETALK__Headshot (2015)lThe Fight To End Cancer is absolutely thrilled to announce that Ben Mulroney (Anchor, CTV’s ETALK) will host the 5th Annual Fight To End Cancer Gala, in support of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, as our Official FTEC2016 Master of Ceremonies!

Ben will be donating his time, for the entire duration of the evening, and will surely help make our event an unforgettable experience. A huge thank you to Ben and his team at Bell Media for taking part in the Fight To End Cancer.

We are looking forward to seeing Ben in our ring on Saturday June 4th, at Toronto’s historic Old Mill Inn!

We asked Ben a few questions about what being a part of an event like ours, means to him personally.  You can read his brief interview and full biography, below.

What Company do you work for?
Bell Media

What is your job title and description?
Anchor of CTV’s ETALK – the #1 most-watched entertainment newsmagazine in Canada.

The Fight To End Cancer gala raises funds for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Have you ever worked at any other fundraiser that supports them?
Yes, last May I had the honor of hosting the ‘Tailoring Care’ event for Princess Margaret, in support of men’s health. I’ve also hosted other events, in Toronto and LA, for the Rally for Kids With Cancer.

Has cancer ever affected you, or anyone in your life?
I have been fortunate enough that none of my closest friends, or family have battled cancer, but it is a near certainty that they will one day.

In figurative terms, what does being a part of the Fight To End Cancer, mean to you?
There are so many forms of cancer, so to be a part of this fight is to be part of the most noble war of our lifetime. To imagine a world without cancer, is to picture a future where millions of lives are spared, where pain is lessened, where time, energy and money are devoted to other things, other goals, other passions. This is, by definition, a better world and one we all deserve.

Ben Mulroney Biography
Anchor, CTV’s ETALK:

Ben Mulroney considers himself a pretty lucky guy. “I love movies, television and music, so as Anchor of Canada’s #1 entertainment show, ETALK, I can say this is my dream job.”

A veteran of entertainment reporting for more than a decade, Montreal-born Mulroney is an expert in his industry and is regarded by many Hollywood stars (north and south of the border) as a friendly face, a respected journalist and a pro at his job. Mulroney got his start as the Quebec City Correspondent for talktv’s The Chatroom in 2000, before becoming co-host on the interactive show in July 2001. He then moved to a new role of entertainment reporter for CTV’s CANADA AM in October 2001. Mulroney was also the host of CANADIAN IDOL for six seasons.

Now in his 14th year with ETALK, Mulroney delivers entertainment news daily from the ETALK studio in Toronto, and travels the world to interview the biggest stars – reporting from the biggest red carpet events, including the OSCARS®, GOLDEN GLOBES® and JUNO Awards.

Mulroney added radio airwaves to his repertoire in 2009, as host and co-creator of ETALK 20, a weekly two-hour radio show that aired on 11 Bell Media Radio stations across Canada. In February 2010, Mulroney reported on entertainment news from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games for CTV. In April 2012, Mulroney joined LIVE! WITH KELLY host Kelly Ripa as co-host on the popular daytime talk show, in one-of-four shows that aired live from Banff, AB. Less than a month later, Mulroney was invited back to share the LIVE! stage with Ripa, co-hosting for the second time from her set in New York City. Impressed with his co-hosting duties, ABC News announced in June 2012 that Mulroney would add the role of contributor to his resume for the Weekend Edition of their popular EMMY® Award-winning morning news program, GOOD MORNING AMERICA (GMA).

Mulroney found his calling in show business, not politics, despite being the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and having a law degree from Laval University and a history degree from Duke University.

In 2012, Mulroney was the national spokesperson for WaterCan, a charity focused on bringing drinking water to those most in need. In this capacity, he helped raise funds and awareness by climbing the highest peak in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro. Most recently, Mulroney became Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s new National Ambassador, leading the organization’s Great Strides Walk in Toronto – a fundraising event in support of CF research and care programs. Mulroney is also on the board of The Shoebox Project for Shelters, a national charitable organization, whose mission is to collect and distribute gifts packaged in shoeboxes to women in shelters across Canada and to help raise awareness about homelessness.

Married to fashion designer and stylist Jessica Mulroney, Mulroney is also the proud father of their two twin boys, Brian Gerald Alexander and John Benedict Dimitri, born in August 2010, and daughter Isabel Veronica (“Ivy”), born June 2013.

COMMITTEE FEATURE: LYNN & BETTY ANN MOSHER

The Fight To End Cancer is made possible by many people – our sponsors, fighters, but also, our volunteers and committee members. We want to take you behind the scenes of #FTEC2016, to meet the people who are fighting cancer outside of the ring…

Lynn and Betty Ann Mosher, (top left) representing Fight To End Cancer at Taste of the Danforth 2015

How did you get involved with Fight To End Cancer?

BA: I joined Kingsway Boxing Club in late 2006 and became good friends with Jennifer Huggins. In 2011, she approached me with the idea of starting a white-collar charity boxing event, in support of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. In that same year, my Mother had been diagnosed with cancer and became one of the many patients at Princess Margaret Hospital. Because of this very close and personal experience with cancer I immediately offered my assistance, at any level, to support her unique charity event.

LynnLM: It was during early morning, one-on-one sessions with Jennifer that she talked about how she was encountering more and more clients and friends who where fighting cancer themselves, or had a family member fighting.  She wanted to do something to help out and her idea was a white-collar boxing match.  At that time, my Mom was receiving radiation treatments after having a cancer tumor removed, so there was no hesitation. I said I would help in any way I could.

Both Lynn and Betty Ann have proudly been with Fight To End Cancer, since its inception! While Betty-Ann heads up the gala auctions and raffles as our Team Lead, Lynn is the Reception Lead.

In Lynn’s own words about being involved with the Fight To End Cancer, “I have a great group of dedicated volunteers who, year after year, help bring the vision of Fight To End Cancer together that makes the evening, such a success.”

Why is the Fight To End Cancer important to you?

BettyAnnBA: Cancer has impacted everyone. For me personally, it has taken my Aunt Maudie, my cousin Scott, my friend Brigette and, most recently, my dear friend Kim. Princess Margaret Hospital has also helped both my Mother and my brother successfully beat cancer!

The Fight To End Cancer allows me the opportunity to work with many inspiring individuals, all with the same goal – to organize a unique charity event raising money for Princess Margaret Urgent Cancers Fund, and to support the fight against cancer.
LM: Being a part of the Fight To End Cancer is, not only an honor every year, it is a privilege that I am very proud of.  I work with committee members and volunteers who have been together for a while now and who form the Fight To End Cancer family.  We all know our role and what the mission is…to make every day a “Fight To End Cancer” day.

Some would say I am as dedicated to and passionate about the Fight To End Cancer, as I am about the company I work for, Landscape Plus Ltd. – and I am.  I really take the whole thing very personally.  I drive a truck with a Fight To End Cancer decal on it, I wear my Fight To End Cancer clothing, I flash anything that is Fight To End Cancer and I am proud to do so.

It is also my opportunity to give back to an organization, whose people dedicate their lives daily to helping those that continue to fight the fight.  These people were professional, kind and compassionate with my Mom and my family when we needed their help, I wouldn’t have wanted my Mom’s treatment to be anywhere else.

Tell us about a day in the life of you.

Left to right; Betty-Ann Mosher, FTEC 2013 fighter Shireen Fabing, Lynn Mosher at FTEC 2015 Media Day

BA: On a normal work day, I am up early and off to meet the staff of our family business – a Toronto based landscape design/build company (Landscape Plus Ltd. – Lead Sponsor for FTEC 2016). At work, I do everything from help organize the crews, track progress on jobs, select and purchase plant material, to physically work on-site. Evenings often include either a boxing conditioning class, a technical boxing class, or a solo workout at Kingsway Boxing Club. Weekends definitely include a Saturday morning boxing conditioning class (with Coach Virgil Barrow) and a teens boxing class for my daughter, followed by a ritual coffee with friends/family.

LM: During the season, my days start very early being present for the Design/Build crew morning start-up, followed by meeting and coordinating the Garden Maintenance crew start-up.  My days involve managing the office, sourcing and picking up supplies/replenishing stock, interacting with current Garden Maintenance clients and recruiting new Garden Maintenance clients. And, of course, participate in any Fight To End Cancer conference calls and meetings.

lp

We cannot thank Betty-Ann and Lynn enough for the incredible dedication and passion that they bring to the Fight To End Cancer. Thank you both!

We are very proud to be working with Landscape Plus Ltd. once again and to have them as our Lead Sponsor for FTEC 2016.

A WORD FROM THE SPONSORS OF THE FIGHT TO END CANCER

THE WOMEN OF FIGHT TO END CANCER

image

On average, 96,400 Canadian women will be diagnosed with cancer and 37,000 women will die from cancer.

Every year, the Fight To End Cancer Gala features at least one female bout that proves to be the ‘Fight Of The Night’.

Join us, as we celebrate International Women’s Day by reflecting on all of the hard work that our past, and present, female fighters have put into training to step into our ring and the tens of thousands of dollars that have been raised (collectively between them), in support of cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Take a look at some of their stories…

janaya
JANAYA KHAN – FTEC2012 Janaya Khan, known as “the future in the Black Lives Matter movement”, Janaya is a Black, queer, gender non-conforming activist, staunch Afro-futurist, social justice educator and boxer based in Toronto, Canada. As the co-founder of Black Lives Matter Toronto, they are committed to Black liberation, transformative justice and indigenous sovereignty and operate through a Black trans-feminist lens. She strongly believes that the focus and determination that boxing requires can be used, as a tool of empowerment.

KASSANDRA O'REILLY Kassandra O’Reilly is the current 48kg Provincial Champion. She trains with the Steeltown Boxing Club under head coach, Bob Wilcox. Known for her nasty left hook, Kassandra is honoured to be part of the “Fight to End Cancer”. She is dedicating her performance to the memory of her coaches son, Robbie and both of her grandparents who all lost their courageous battles with cancer.

Kate-Hillier
KATE HILLIER – FTEC2013
It’s hard to “throw a stone” these days and not touch someone who has been affected in some way by cancer. Personally, cancer is a reality that I have faced with my immediate family, my extended family, my friends and my community. For all who have lost, have won and continue fighting, I was happy to throw on my gloves to fight for those in need. I dedicated my fight in memory of my Tante Monique, who survived breast cancer, and to my partner in crime Marilyn. “You never know how strong you are… Until being strong is the only choice you have”

Shireen-Fabing
SHIREEN FABING – FTEC2013
Working in the corporate world, I always feel like I have my boxing gloves on but on June 15th, 2013 I proudly “put ‘em up” to support cancer research through, what I believe, is a noble cause. Jennifer Huggins and Kingsway Boxing is proof that we can all help in the Fight To End Cancer, so I am honored to be a fighter. Like many, I’ve been robbed of loved ones and lived through the pain and suffering with victims, friends and colleagues who have experienced the same. I dedicated my three rounds to loved ones lost, survivors and those still fighting this ruthless disease.

jane
JANE WATSON – FTEC2014
One very small effort to advance the fight to find a cure for cancer in our lifetime –the Fight To End Cancer was a chance to do just that, and I am honoured to have had this opportunity. I have watched too many people I dearly love fight cancer. They have faced it head on with grace and courage. They are the true fighters. As I trained, and the challenge got tougher, those who have battled cancer – family, friends and colleagues – were in my thoughts. It is their strength, as they endure each step of their journey, that truly inspired me to push on. So, for all those I care so deeply about, who have looked cancer in the eye, those who continue to fight – you were my inspiration. The Fight To End Cancer is an amazing opportunity to contribute to finding a cure for cancer in our lifetime.

DAWN RAMSAY-BROWN - FTEC2014 The Fight to End Cancer means a chance to fight for all the memories that still need to be made. My daughter will never be able to look into her grandmother’s eyes and see her own, as cancer stole Judith Ramsay from us before they could ever meet. As we watch a close friend battling this disease today, I realize how hard we all must fight to protect the memories that are still to come. It is such a privilege to wake up with a healthy body every day that I wanted to put it to good use for a great cause.

Leslie-Ehm
LESLIE EHM – FTEC2015
Everyone has a fight in life. Some fight to be heard, some to go unnoticed, some to shine and some just to survive. On May 30th, 2015, at 51 years of age, I got into the ring to fight. For me, it was a bucket list thing. Anyone who knows me, knows I’ve been a fighter all of my life. I always refer to it as “the good fight” – the relentless pursuit of goodness and what’s ‘right’. I try to fight that good fight every day. But for one incredible night, I got to fight not just the ‘good fight’, but a super badass one as well. Not only did I get to take on an opponent and go three rounds in a real amateur bout, (which is beyond cool), I also got to raise my fists against the evil that is cancer. Because every drop of sweat, and every punch thrown and taken was  in solidarity with those who have faced the disease and won or lost and for everyone who loved those fighters. For my Uncle Stevie, for my cousin Elli, for the grandmother I never met, for my friend Philip, for my friends (especially Dayna who is battling breast cancer today), family and a better future – this fight was for all of you.

GEORGIA CURTIS – FTEC2015
I am excited and proud to have participated in the Fight To End Cancer 2015! Over the years I have paddled, run, and golfed in various fundraising efforts for cancer-related causes.  I know way too many people who have fought, or are fighting cancer…my guess is that you do too. For five months, I trained and fundraised in preparation of my match on May 30th, 2015, I stepped into the ring and fought like hell for an important cause. This fight was for my pal Cindy Weeks. She battled breast cancer and was cancer-free for years. In 2008, cancer returned and since then, Cindy has lived with metastatic disease. Her brave tenacity is both heroic and inspiring – she is the toughest fighter I know. She believes that breakthroughs will come, and that cancer can be beaten.

PAIGE CUNNINGHAM – FTEC2015
I participated in the 4th Annual Fight To End Cancer benefiting the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. For those of you who know me, I am sure you could NOT have pictured me stepping into the ring, in front of hundreds of people, punching someone…. but I did it! I, physically and figuratively, fought for those that can’t. Working at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, I am overwhelmed with the number of stories I hear everyday about CANCER. Some are terrible and devastating and make me want to work that much harder everyday, so I don’t have to hear anything like them again. On the other hand, I hear so many success stories and stories of joy and happiness that cancer has been BEATEN. These ALSO make me want to work harder, so I can continue to hear those stories. I fought to give those fighting cancer a chance, and I fought so we can decrease the number of people that hear the words “you have cancer.” Everyone, in one way or another, has, been, or will be affected by cancer. Personally, I have lost aunts and both of my grandfathers to this terrible disease. I have many loved ones who continue to fight with cancer as we speak and some who went through the cancer journey and came out on top. Every fight is different. My grandpa died of prostate cancer in 2000. In 2005, I found out that my dad also had prostate cancer. With little knowledge of cancer as a whole – I immediately thought the worst. My dad had a prostatectomy and THANKFULLY is coming up on his 10th year, CANCER FREE. I feel so blessed and VERY lucky. My hope for the future is that enough preventative measures will be in place so that NO ONE will have to face up against cancer EVER again. The fight to end cancer is an uphill battle for everyone involved. It is a group effort and without funds raised, so researchers can work their magic, there would be no advancements made.
Erica-McMaster
ERICA MCMASTER – FTEC2015
Last spring, my other half expressed his desire to apply to be one of the fighters for FTEC 2015 – naturally I was supportive and pretty quickly decided I wanted to go down the road together.  Several months later, I had no doubt that this journey would be one of the most physically and emotionally demanding to date, but also the most rewarding. Cancer has affected most of us in some shape or form.  Personally, I lost my mother to the disease when I was just shy of my twelfth birthday; it goes without saying that her absence has had an enormous impact on my life. I miss her every day. Two of my grandparents have died from cancer and, just last year, a childhood friend at the age of 34.  Add to that the friends who have lost parents and loved ones – it’s too much. Being a fighter in this incredible event gave me the chance to make a difference and punch cancer in the face on behalf of all those we’ve lost, and those who continue to fight it every day. We are so fortunate to have the resources available to us that we do. The Princess Margaret is one of the top 5 Cancer Research Centres in the world and an international leader in the delivery of Personalized Cancer Medicine.  I have been on the receiving end of this care, as part of the High Risk Breast Clinic, where I go for annual screenings and check ups . By pledging your support to this cause, you will be helping ensure that these programs, as well as, ground breaking research, can continue.

After stepping into the ring at Fight To End Cancer (FTEC) 2015, Leslie Ehm has generously come back on board, as a sponsor,  for Fight To End Cancer’s 2016 gala with her company – Combustion. Thanks to their generous support, Combustion will be this year’s co-50/50 presenting partner, as well as, fighting in the corner with 2016 Fight To End Cancer Fighter Kael Cruz. As Kael’s Fight Sponsor, Leslie and her team have already raised upward of $4,000.00 in direct donations supporting the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Leslie Ehm, President & “Chief Fire Starter” of Combustion, has been a supporter of the Fight To End Cancer for the past several years, as both a donor and gala attendee. Sitting on the sidelines, however, was simply not enough for Leslie and in late 2014 she bravely signed up for the six month long journey of intense Olympic-style boxing training (through the Kingsway Boxing Club) in preparation for fighting at Fight To End Cancer’s 2015 event.

In addition to Leslie’s hard work training, she managed to raise an astounding $25,000.00 in donations that went directly to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s Urgent Cancer Priorities Fund.

Leslie fought with an extreme level of passion and determination in her match against fellow FTEC Alumni member, Georgia Curtis.  Though Leslie did not win her match against Georgia, she (like all those who step into our ring to help in the mission to knock out cancer) is still very much a winner for everything that she has done (and continues to do) for the Fight To End Cancer.

We can not thank Leslie enough for the ongoing support that she and her company, Combustion, have provided to us. Without the support of companies, like Combustion, Fight To End Cancer would not be as successful as it is.

We’re proud to be sponsors and supporters of the The Fight To End Cancer because it doesn’t just raise funds for Princess Margaret critical cancer research, it challenges people to put their fists where their hearts are and show their solidarity with cancer sufferers in a very real and inspiring way. Combustion President, Leslie Ehm, stepped into the ring for FTEC in 2015 and our entire team went through the incredible journey from training, to ringside with her. We were all blown away by the passion, commitment and integrity of the fighters, trainers, and organizers and our hearts will always be with this amazing event and charity. Fists up! On Sunday, February 28th 2016, the Fight To End Cancer (FTEC) took over Wahooz Stills & Motion Pictures’ photo studio to shoot the Official 2016 Fight To End Cancer Promotional Campaign.

Led by the co-creative vision of Principle Photographer, Al Quintero & FTEC Founder, Jennifer Huggins; our FTEC fighters went through a marathon of wardrobe changes, hair & make-up touch ups and various set designs, all in the name of securing the best shots that will be used for promoting this year’s gala fundraiser on Saturday, June 4th 2016, in support of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

Outfitted in formal wear provided by our partners at TIPTOP Tailors and in athletic wear provided by our partners at Kimurawear; our 2016 Fight Team were fully decked out in the finest attire, as they stepped in front of the cameras and added “part-time model” to their resumes.

After hours of hard work, our 2016 fighters managed to help capture some incredible shots that will both inspire and amaze.

A huge thank you to all of the photographers, hair & make-up artists, assistance crew & FTEC’s Planning Committee for coming together and helping to build something, truly special.

Although we can’t say too much about the inspiration behind this year’s theme quite yet, we could not be more excited about what will surely be Fight To End Cancer’s most visually striking promotional campaign, to date.

A Message From FTEC Alumni – Paige Cunningham

Paige Cunningham - Fight To End Cancer 2015 Fight Team Alumni
Paige Cunningham – Fight To End Cancer 2015 Fight Team Alumni

Dear Future Fighters,

It has been one full year since I stepped into the ring on the most terrifyingly, electric night of my life and not a day goes by that I don’t think about what I did.

I do get to walk into work every day at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and see a large mural of myself with blood dripping down my face on the wall, but it doesn’t stop there. I have SO many beautiful memories. I have the memory of 10 scared and brave individuals, starting a journey and not knowing where exactly it would take us. These 10 individuals, plus numerous other people that helped us get to where we ended up, have become a huge part of my life… an entirely new family. A special bond that no one else can share. They helped me and continue to help me grow and teach me things, both physically and mentally. They pushed me to work harder every time I trained and I also had to find it within, to push myself to the limit for eight months. I was at Kingsway Boxing Club more in those eight long months than I was at home and I don’t regret a single second. You HAVE to put in the work. I say long because it does seem like a long time, but trust me when I say: IT GOES BY TOO FAST.

My advice to you would be to please take it all in, get to the gym and train your butt off (you’ll be both sad and slightly relieved when you’re done and not training for anything later) and get on your social media and raise some MONEY! Set a goal for yourself, a goal that scares you and REACH IT. I promise you can do it. Send out a link of your fundraising page to every one you know and make the ‘ask’ personal. There is a much larger chance someone will donate to you if you’re asking them personally and directly. All anyone can say is no! Oh well, you tried! It’s definitely an intimidating task and even working in the nonprofit, fundraising world, it scared me. But really, what do you have to lose? I posted so much about #FTEC on social media that I am sure I lost a few cyber friends or followers, but who needs them? I’d much rather raise money for cancer research, plus the outpouring of support (through donations and well wishes) I received from people I didn’t even know or who I hadn’t spoken to in years evoked an indescribable feeling.

Choosing to try out and being part of Fight To End Cancer was the best possible decision I have ever made. So many factors in my life led me to Kingsway and into that ring and because of Fight To End Cancer, my life has changed in the most wonderful ways. I am SO grateful for the opportunities it has opened up for me, the people I have met along the way and, an added personal bonus, of forming the best relationship with one of my fellow fighters.

If I could turn back time and do it again, I would be back at the gym, every day (sometimes twice a day) in a heartbeat. I wish I could have stopped time and taken in certain moments for a little bit longer or saved them forever. I do however have the memories in my head, heart and, of course, a lot of pictures. I also have the feeling that I did something and was part of something that was so much bigger than I could have ever imagined.

I am so proud to be part of the FTEC family and alumni. It seriously is such an honour and a privilege. If you are given the opportunity to fight, TAKE IT and don’t take this lightly. This is one experience I PROMISE you will never forget. Give it your all! Remember who you’re fighting for.

TRAIN. FIGHT. END.

Whitby Magician Ready To Do Battle In Oshawa

Article From Durham Region

By Mike Ruta
OSHAWA — Richard Forget and fellow magician Ray Anderson have known each other for around 20 years. But the former says they’ve never worked together — until now.

Forget, a Whitby resident, and Toronto’s Anderson match skills in The Battle of Magicians on Feb. 12 at Oshawa’s Regent Theatre.

“It’s a battle of wits between two competing performers,” Forget says. “It’s kind of, anything you can do I can do better.”

The evening is broken up into rounds and a winner is declared at the end.

Forget says the interesting part is that the two come from different ends of the magic spectrum: he’s a traditional musician while Anderson is one of the newer breed, a “comedy magician.”

“It’s finding ways to mesh our characters together,” Forget says of the show. “There are some parts where we perform separately and other parts where we come together.”

Becoming a magician was all Forget wanted to do when he was a kid. A shy boy growing up in a large family, he says his cousins were his friends and his first audiences. Maybe he knew magic would help him break out of his shell, or maybe he wanted the attention, he speculates. Whatever the reason, and despite some “lean years,” Forget has reached the pinnacle of his profession. He won the International Brotherhood of Magicians’ Stage Magician of the Year in 2004 and 2009 making him, by his estimation, the only person to win the title for two separate acts. In 2011, he was named Canadian Magician of the Year by the Canadian Association of Magicians.

Forget and Anderson are also competing to raise funds for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. It’s a cause that’s especially near and dear to his assistant, Jennifer Huggins, through her website, www.fighttoendcancer.com. A portion of the ticket proceeds goes to the charity and you can also sponsor one of the magicians on the site.

A “spectacular finish” to the magicians’ battle is promised but, as you might expect, Forget isn’t giving much away.

“It’s an illusion, I’ll put it that way,” he says.

The show is at 8 p.m. and the theatre is at 50 King St. E.

Legendary Artist David Bowie Loses Battle Against Cancer at 69

Story via The Hollywood Reporter by Mike Barnes, Shirley Halperin, Billboard
1/10/2016 10:42pm PST

The singer-songwriter and producer excelled at glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during an eclectic 40-plus-year career.

David Bowie has died after a battle with cancer, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 69.

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” read a statement posted on the artist’s official social media accounts.

The influential singer-songwriter and producer excelled at glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronica during his eclectic 40-plus-year career. He just released his 25th album, Blackstar, Jan. 8, which was his birthday.

Bowie’s artistic breakthrough came with 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, an album that fostered the notion of rock star as space alien. Fusing British mod with Japanese kabuki styles and rock with theater, Bowie created the flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

NATASA JAMNIK-SOUSA SUMS UP THE FIGHT TO END CANCER 2016  IN A RHYME

Let me drop this rhyme about FTEC,
it is an event that is legendary.

Raising money for cancer research that’s what it’s about,
now raise your voices to scream and shout:

FTEC for a future that’s cancer free,
FTEC for a future that’s cancer free.

It’s a black tie gala at the Old Milla’
I guarantee you it’s gonna be a thrilla.

With Vegas-style entertainment and a whole lot more,
this event will definitely not be a bore.

FTEC for a future that’s cancer free,
FTEC for a future that’s cancer free.

There are five bouts taking place throughout the night,
the best of the best are coming out to fight.

The first bout fighters are Kael and Vignesh,
brains and brawn it’s the ultimate mesh.

Jason and Andreas are the next ones in the ring,
we’ll see who’s the champion when the bells goes ding.

Kyle and Jeff follow them in their fight,
they both throw punches with incredible might.

The co-main event is between Sammy and yours truly,
two girls in the ring might get a bit unruly.

The main event belongs to Craig and Cory,
the titans will duke it out in all their glory.

It’s for a great cause so please donate!

This partnership has been a long time in the making. Fight To End Cancer’s Founder, Jennifer Huggins has travelled the world as a “Magicians Assistant” working with Richard for over a decade. In Jennifer’s words:

“Much of my inspiration for the Fight To End Cancer Boxing Gala has come from the work I have been a part of with Richard. From stage shows and tours to International television shows, I feel honoured to have had the influence of magic in my life. The partnership of The Battle Of Magicians and my cause Fight To End Cancer is a dream come true”

Our gala event is just one part of an ongoing fundraising effort by Fight To End Cancer, which will continue throughout the year and whose success will in large part, rely on community teamwork and continued media exposure. Though the Boxing Gala in June 2016 will continue to be the “Main Event” celebration of our fundraising efforts, partnering with the Battle Of The Magicians brings two new members to our #FTEC2016 Fight Team.

With these efforts, we are confident we will reach our goal of raising over $1,000,000 annually by 2018 to support this cause.

Lauzon is an Ojibway actor and comedian living in Toronto. He has been a regular on the popular CBC-TV comedy show Air Farce since 2004, and has appeared on several of their New Year’s Eve specials.

“I know that with a lot of my friends, the more they tease you, the more they love you.” – Craig Lauzon describes First Nations humour

“I love to make fun. It all depends on how you do it and the tone,” he said. “The person you are usually doing it to knows if you’re having fun or not.”

Fight to push boundaries

Although Lauzon brings that sense of humour and wit to his personal projects, he has yet to make that crossover to the Air Farce specials, where he is the only indigenous person on the show.

“We are a satire show. It’s sketch comedy; it’s political. There’s not really a group in this country outside of politicians that are more political than we are,” said Lauzon, referring to the indigenous community.

He thinks shows such as Air Farce should have more fun with the indigenous point of view on current affairs.

“I think a lot of it [the resistance] is fear of backlash,” Lauzon said. He cited the NFL’s Washington football team name as one example that is ripe for satire.

“I feel like there is always a way to poke fun of and make light of a situation if you handle it the right way. I think that is what our job is supposed to be on this kind of a show.”

Lauzon referenced John Oliver, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as other performers who take serious topics and shed light on them through the use of humour and satire.

Fight To End Cancer

But Lauzon also has a serious side, he is currently training for a boxing match in June, as part of the Fight to End Cancer, which raises funds for cancer research.

August Schellenberg inspired Craig Lauzon.

Lauzon was overcome with emotion when he spoke about his motivation for getting involved.

“In 2012, I got to work with one of my heroes, August Schellenberg,” Lauzon said, his voice shaking.

At 75, Schellenberg, who appeared in Grey’s AnatomyDreamkeeper and Free Willy, had finally realized his lifelong dream of bringing an all-star indigenous cast to perform Shakespeare’s King Lear at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

Lauzon said Schellenberg, a Golden Gloves boxer in his youth, was still going to the gym every day while they performed King Lear.

I heard about this boxing event and wanted to do it in his name.
– Craig Lauzon

?Schellenberg had already battled a bout of cancer and performed the two-hour play, in which he faced some very physical demands, with just one lung.

Schellenberg died the following year after a recurrence of lung cancer.

Lauzon’s has turned down work in order to take part in the Fight to End Cancer — and turning down work is no easy task for a Canadian actor. Neither will it be easy to climb into that ring on June 4 in Toronto.

“It’s going to be for Auggie,” Lauzon said quietly.

Cory Raymond VS. Craig Lauzon

WORDS FROM CORY RAYMOND:

I am still amazed at the gross impact of this disease on a day to day basis and frustrated by its reach! I am fighting because I can, because the last plug I want to see pulled is on cancer! Not a dying relative or friend! I am proud to be part of this campaign and though I realize alone I can’t end cancer, together with the team I have joined we can definitely provide a positive impact to the research of this horrible disease.

The next 7 months of training will be tough but irrelevant to what others have endured in their own battle with cancer. That is why I am participating in the 5th Annual Fight to End Cancer in support of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. I am raising research dollars – with a vision of reaching the ultimate goal – To Conquer Cancer In Our Lifetime! “IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING” – Muhammad Ali

WORDS FROM CRAIG LAUZON:

Throughout every stage of my life someone I have known and loved has been taken by cancer, from school chums to family members to colleagues and friends. Two years ago I lost my hero and mentor, August Schellenberg, to lung cancer. In 2012 I got the opportunity to work with him and at 75 he could still throw his punches with lightning speed. In his youth he had been a golden gloves boxer in Montreal. He loved acting but he really loved boxing and I could think of no better way than to honour his memory in the ring.

I had the opportunity to take part in this event last year and had to pull out early on at the time two of my friends were fighting cancer and today only one them is here. I won’t let thathappen again.

With your help, I hope to reach myfundraising goal and make a difference.

INTRODUCING FTEC 2016 CO-MAIN EVENT
Natasa Jamnik-Sousa VS. Sam Krystantos

Sam vs. Natasa

Words From Natasa Jamnik-Sousa:

Cancer is a word I despise with every fiber of my being. Unfortunately, it is a word that my family and I know all to well. 14 years ago, I lost my sister to osteo sarcoma. Most recently my aunt lost the fight against cancer. My grandfather, unfortunately is another member of my family that is added to the list of people I have lost to cancer. Fortunately both my mother and cousin who were diagnosed with cancer have been in the clear for the past several years.

Losing someone to cancer is one of the most devastating occurrences to have happen in your life. When you lose someone, there is a void that can never be filled.

I live vicariously through the example that my sister put forth. She had a zest for life and continued to smile and find the positive despite the insurmountable obstacles in her life.

The next several months, despite the numerous challenges I will face is nothing when I think about how hard my sister, aunt and grandfather fought to overcome cancer. If you would like to get to know Natasa’s personal story better and donate to his fundraising goal for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, you can do so by clicking here.
